Enrollment limits hit Penn State as 6500 rejected

Dr Milton S Eisenhower told FFA week attendees at State College that about 6500 of roughly 10 000 freshman applicant requests will be turned down next fall. The York Lancaster County District FFA Softball Team won its third straight trophy, and John D Stoner 19 was named regional vice president for a 10 county area. He farms with his father near Lampeter and has a long FFA record including Holstein cattle and a 4H background.

Acreage Reserve Soil Bank Plan Gets Underway

Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson announces participation requirements for the 1956 Acreage Reserve Program under Public Law 540. County ASC committees will administer the plan and will publish local details when signed farm agreements become available at the county office. The 1956 rates apply only to this year as a special program to meet legislative time limits.

Lancaster County Farm Products Value in 1954 Hits 80 Million

County farmers sold 7 951 farms 80 150 566 in 1954 according to a Census Bureau preliminary report. Crops totaled 22 110 076 with field crops 17 664 288 vegetables 1 986 191 fruits and nuts 657 187 and horticultural specialties 1 802 410. Livestock and products reached 57 995 443 including dairy 16 657 487 poultry 20 381 221 and other livestock 20 956 735. Forest products sold totaled 45 047 and state reports list county values with copies available from the Census Bureau in Washington.

Crop Outlook Improves Amid Warm to Cold Swing in Lancaster

County Agricultural Agent Max M. Smith reports rapid crop progress after last week's heat. Corn and tomatoes show improvement while first cuttings of hay must be made now to preserve feed value. Moisture has risen to two and a third inches for the month, with scattered showers forecast for Friday and Saturday.

Stauffer Farms Hosts Four H Stock Judging Event

About 60 youths and advisors from seven counties judged registered Hampshire Hog Suffolk sheep and Angus cattle at Stauffer Homestead Farms East Earl for a preliminary to the Pennsylvania 4 H Club Week in August. Lancaster Chester Montgomery Franklin Lebanon York Adams counties were represented.
