The upcoming plowing contest at the Isaac Geib farm in Manheim borough sees eight entrants this year, up from prior counts, as Lancaster County Soil and Water Conservation District officials note a higher level of competition and interest.
Elmer Good of the Lititz SWCD announces a 50 pound gilt prize for the Field Day Pig Chase next Tuesday afternoon. Richard Guioff and Groff, entrants from Lititz and East Earl, join last year’s champ Marvin Zimmerman as contenders in the contour plowing contest resuming after a hiatus.
July 26 calendar lists County FFA Hog Show at Lancaster Stock Yards 8 am and Lancaster County SWCD Field Day at Home Graybill Farm Manheim R3 at 9:30 am. Plowing Contest noted with continuation on Page 4 and event on July 28 at 11 pm.
The Pennsylvania Yorkshire Cooperative Association plans two quality park events August 4 and 5 at Guernsey Sales Pavilion Lancaster Route 30 East. August 4 begins 9:30 am with a certified litter contest followed by a Junior and Senior live evaluation contest at about 10:30 am with prizes totaling 170 dollars. Penn State extension specialists discuss fitting showing pedigree housing rations and genetic selection in the afternoon. August 5 starts 1 pm with showing and judging of Yorkshire sale animals and 6:30 pm Yorkshire sale concludes the program.
Red Rose Future Farmers of America chapter set plans for an August 16 picnic and a five inning softball playoff at Huestand Field between northern and southern county teams. Reservations due by August 5, meals coordinated by Jay Fisher. Trophies for the FFA Hog Show displayed. show set for next Tuesday at Lancaster Stock Yards.
Lancaster County dairymen and families gathered for the Atlantic Breeders Cooperative Twilight Meeting despite a thunder threat. ABC showcased Jersey Guernsey and Holstein bulls as sire analyst Harry Roth explained each sire while Cy King offered comments. A dramatic moment occurred when a bull bolted but was controlled. Roger Emig hosted and announced the August 4 Atlantic on Parade and a chicken barbecue from 11 am to 1 pm with a $1 ticket.
Four 4 H Club members from Lancaster County join a 39 member delegation from 13 Southeastern Counties for the National 4 H Citizenship Short Course at the National 4 H Center in Washington DC. The session runs Sunday July 24 through Saturday July 30.
The Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service releases a survey showing higher custom rates for farm work this year with increases mostly under five percent and a few over ten percent. Nationwide USDA data indicate growing use of machine harvesting with 28 percent of 153 million acres custom combined and 52 percent of farm tonnage moved by custom haulage.
Lancaster County Future Farmers of America plans the Fourth Annual Market Hog Show and Sale at the Lancaster Stock Yards on Tuesday July 26. Show begins 8 00 am with sale at 1 30 pm. About 200 head entered. Henry Gruber of A B Packing Co Allentown to judge. A fitting and showing contest sponsored by Eby s Feed Mall Lititz. Lancaster County Swine Breeders Association to donate trophies.
