Adding a Basement Modernizes an Old Midwest Home
A 40 year old Midwestern house lacking central heating and modern conveniences gains space and strength by adding a concrete masonry basement. The project raises the house with screw-jack timbers, lays 8x8x16 inch blocks for an 8 inch thick wall, then fills footings with cast in place concrete and applies plaster and bituminous coating for water protection. This example supports Operation Home Improvement, urging upgrades to existing homes nationwide.
