660 Lancaster Farms Sign Up In Soil Conservation

A total of 660 Lancaster County farmers have enrolled in the 1956 agricultural conservation program, more than last year. About 3,000 farms have been contacted for 1956 wheat acreage plans, with about half yet to be interviewed. May 31 is the deadline for 1956 corn loan applications at 1.75 dollars per bushel.

PP&L Buys Land For Power Plant Near Bainbridge

Pennsylvania Power and Light Company bought a 766 acre tract 15 miles below Harrisburg on the west bank of the Susquehanna near York Haven opposite Bainbridge. The purchase aims to lay groundwork for future generating capacity even if no plant is planned immediately.

Chicago Steers Reach High Prices on Mixed Midweek Trade

Midweek Chicago fed steers sold uneven with high choice and prime values up to 2700 dollars on two large loads. Other loads traded around 2650 dollars, with most prime steers 24.00 to 25.50 per hundredweight and bulk steer classes around 1950 to 2150 dollars. Market volume included three days of cattle at 12 major markets totaling 188000 head versus 180000 prior week.

A 89 acre West Earl Two farm known as the Noah L Nolt Farm sold for 106000 at 1203 an acre to Edwin B Nolt Jr from David W Martin. The property includes two brick homes a bank barn chicken house tobacco shed implement shed garage and milk house under construction. Nolt, inventor of a hay baler, markets the device with New Holland Machine Co.

Lancaster county convention plans for 23 Farm Women societies set for November 3 at Manheim Township High School. County president Mrs E Robert Nolt names place committee. upcoming tasks include program chair and other committees by June. Additional exec meetings scheduled for June 2. events include Homemakers Day April 25 at First Presbyterian Lancaster and Health Fair at Lancaster YMCA. Camp Swatara dates Aug 19-21.

Weather and farming notes from Lancaster County March report

The Lancaster weather bureau notes March precipitation 2 inches above normal with 12.2 inches of snow the highest in 12 years. Ground remains soggy delaying spring field work and the Allis Chalmers Field Day to April 10 at David Witmer Farm. Temperatures remain mild into April with normal to near normal rainfall forecast. Tornadoes occur in the Plains as March ends and final county totals compare to historic snow years.

Keystone Dairy Sale Tops $710 at Mount Joy Auction

Fifty head of dairy cattle sold Saturday at the Keystone Sales Barn in Mount Joy totaling 16056 with an average of 321. Tops included a cattle at 710, another at 650 and a third at 500, reported manager Clarence Lyons.
