Erie County Law Faces Hearing Over Sales Tax Change
Erie County Republicans attack a proposed local law by Majority Leader Tim Meyers that would let a simple majority extend the sales tax without a referendum. They warn it silences residents and shifts power to fewer lawmakers. A public hearing is set for 6 p.m. May 16 at Old County Hall in Buffalo.

Social Security expands access to SSI through final rule
The Social Security Administration published a final rule expanding the definition of a public assistance household to include SNAP households and partial assistance scenarios. Effective Sept 30, 2024, the change broadens who can qualify for SSI, raises some payments, and reduces reporting burdens for those in mixed-eligibility households. The rule clarifies that a public assistance household contains an SSI member and at least one other member receiving means-tested income maintenance payments, replacing the prior all-members-on-assistance requirement. The agency aims to boost equity and simplify eligibility while noting SNAP is newly counted under the rule.
