Farm labor law case reaches Supreme Court for review
The judge's ruling that the farm labor contract breach law is invalid will be appealed to the U S Supreme Court. Papers filed in district court by William Henry Perker and W St Julien Jervey for Attorney General Lyon challenge the decision that imprisonment for contract breach violated the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments. The bill of exceptions argues the law targets fraud prevention and crime repression, not debt payment, and distinguishes fraud in contract formation from breach. The case, tied to labor conditions and political pressure, draws wide attention from Charleston observers.
