Secretary Stimson explains the status of college students in the Army Enlisted Reserve Corps. He notes that reserves can be called to active duty at end of term or when the Selective Service age is reached, as war needs demand, a point emphasized in prior announcements and speeches.
The program features four international representatives Great Britain Netherlands China and Russia. Speakers include Captain Cochran e Baden Kadir Yang Wang Nikolai Krasavchenko and Vladimir Pchelintsev. Miss Wang will sing and act despite not speaking English. They will later visit Western college Oxford Oberlin college and the University of Cincinnati during their Ohio stay. Soldiers will depart late October to return to battlefront duties.
Freshmen were introduced to talented upperclassmen in the entertainment field at a campus variety show held in the auditorium. The program featured two freshman singers Dick Waterbury and Thelma Howe along with Stan Mouse Bill Guisewite Janet Harris Johnny Johnson Sig Mayhew Stan Mine Wilbur Adams Milan Graach Harbie Rosen and Adelaide Snyder in the cast.
Edward R. Moore of Kent, 23 year old former University student, is an aviation cadet at the San Antonio Texas aviation cadet center and is training to become an army pilot.
A 26500 improvement program for University buildings and grounds will be finished by January 1. Larry Wooddell announced the plan detailing sidewalk construction over about three miles at 16000, with 8022 already drawn for over a mile of sidewalks this fall. A 10500 painting appropriation covers exterior and interior work on campus facilities including Merrill Hall and the gym. A home adjoining the east campus is being repaired to become the University president's house on 14 acres bought earlier this summer.
William D. Taylor Jr. on leave as industrial relations assistant for Sperry Gyroscope in Brooklyn will broadcast a coast to coast Blue network program tonight from 10 15 to 10 45 p m. The program is sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers and arranged by Taylor with his participation.
Defense production staffing has absorbed most manpower, prompting farmers to seek fruit pickers. About 50 male and female students may work half days, days, or weekends and earn $3 to $8 daily. If applicants are sufficient, transportation will be provided. Men can find jobs in machine shops, mills, and factories in Kent, Akron, and Ravenna. contact Prof. Merle Wagoner in the dean of men’s office.
Two student church groups host introductory parties at 7 30 P M on West Main Street. The Wesley Foundation led by Jerry Elliott features group games singing stunts and a skit by South Willow Men's Co Op. Cider and doughnuts will be served. Dr John F Cuber of the Christian church will direct singing and games at the Christian church corner West Main and Mantua streets.
A new aeronautics course will start about October 1 for University men. Adrian Van Wyen, director of Civil Pilot training, announced. The 16 week course is open to ten men in the Navy V-5 program or V-1 if aviation is their preference. Enrolment is possible now in either V-5 or V-1 to qualify.
The university will offer nearly 10 correspondence courses to allow military members to continue studies. Registrar E C Sto pher said the courses cover major subjects in the curriculum. The U S government will pay half of the soldiers tuition.
The University begins enrollment under a new centralized system in Wills gym. Freshmen totals mirror religious census figures with Methodism leading church representation at 114 newcomers and Catholics, Lutherans, Congregationalists, and others contributing smaller numbers. The registrar process involves advisers, department reps, fee cards, and the treasurer’s office.
Students urged to attend the Stater staff meeting this afternoon at 4 in the Stater office as new editors are chosen. A business staff will also be selected, editor Earl Vacariu says.
Mary Yee and Helen Lee, Chinese freshmen in pre med, share Lowry hall dorm. Yee May Wah and Lee Lai Wah are from Akron and Youngstown respectively, both plan medical technician careers, and both are connected through family laundries.
