Dr Karl Poljani Hungarian lecturer altered his assembly talk to This Age of Transformation arguing the machine age boomeranged into the present crisis. He warned the industrial system pressures, not individuals, fueled the second major war of the century and challenged the survival of humanity under mechanistic governance.
Dr. Karl Poljani visits the campus for two days and will deliver informal talks in political science. At 9 a.m. he speaks to Dr. H. D. Byrne's class, and at 2 p.m. he lecturs to Miss Mona Fletcher's European government class.
Dr Poljani warns that a new global machine society erodes democracy by granting emergency powers to a few and suppressing speech and press. He denounces Mussolini Stalin and Hitler as bandwagon riders of a crumbling world order and argues true democracy suffers when forced into war.
The Forum club will host the first of six monthly meetings at 8 30 p m in room 317 McGilvrey hall. Dr Leonard Bloom says Dr W G Meinke will discuss Is This Our War with a Town Meeting broadcast to follow.
Eight men students reside in the Byrne lodge on South Willow street extension with no landlady. Supervised by Dr. Byrne and wife, the house sits near the Byrne family residence and features two bedrooms, kitchenette, bath, and shared study lounge. The project emphasizes self government and group responsibility with Kent’s track teammate Swede Netzen among residents.
The regular Wednesday social dancing will be held tonight in Wills gymnasium from 8 to 10. All University students are welcome to enjoy two hours of dancing to the nation’s most famous dance bands.
Members of the Math club convene this afternoon at 4 o clock in Merrill hall room 302 for a panel discussion featuring two students and two professors.
Richard Peters of the Cleveland Press will be guest speaker for Chi Pi and journalism students tonight. He will dine at 6 p.m. and speak at 8 p.m. in room 317 McGilvrey Hall with August Quattrochi presiding. Peters, native Clevelander and four years on the Press staff, is a book and author columnist and Fenn College journalism lecturer. He is a Yale graduate with a 1932 BA and previously worked for the Washington Daily News and the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
Committee Chairman Bob Cook announced the season's second migration as University students will travel to Baldwin Wallace stadium in Berea for the final football game this Saturday afternoon. A Kent section of 400 reserved seats on the 40 yard line is set, with tickets on sale at the ticket office until Friday at 4 00 p.m. Reserved seat price details follow.
Floyd Thorne announced the annual informal dance in honor of the football team will be held Friday November 9. Thorne stressed the dress code will be informal and women should not wear formal gowns.
The Student council decided in its Monday meeting to plan a second Akron trip, the first in University history, despite mixed student reaction. A box at Wills gymnasium entrance collected enough support to approve the plans following the successful journey.
Seniors urged to attend this afternoon at 4 in 317 McGilvrey. Ray Hromco president says plans for the coming year will be made and committees appointed.
An experiment in judging debates was held during a radio workshop at the speech institute. Kent affirmative team Vernon Beal and Tom Rickey faced Akron University negative team on the federal power issue.
Halamay Ross selection for the first freshman dance assigns Halamay Ross’s orchestra to provide music for the event. The dance is scheduled for Friday, November 22, with campus attendees expected to enjoy a formal social gathering in the evening.
Student committee recommends reducing weekly assemblies to twice monthly focusing on entertainment. Committee members include Bob Mosher Martha Rufener and Bob Leese with faculty observers Dr D W Pearce Miss Lauar Hill Miss Elfreda Littlejohn Miss Helen Machan Dr A W Cowen and Prof E Turner Stump. Dr Leebrick says the recommendation will be considered.
Tom Utter president of the Kap pa Mu Kappa fraternity led a informal discussion during the Men's Union weekly lunch at the Robinhood. The topic was Social Hygiene in the Army and was organized by chairman John Steiner. Next week's speaker has not yet been announced.
Swimming instructor and supervisor of women's intramural athletics Miss Julia Marshall will attend the National Women's Aquatic forum during Christmas holidays. The forum takes place at Fort Lauderdale Florida in connection with the National Intercollegiate Swimming Coaches' forum.
