Lieutenant Barich and his crew boarded the blazing command ship after it was struck by a Japanese bomber. They aided in bringing the fire under control amid exploding ammunition and gasoline hazards in the flaming vessel.
Lieutenant Barich returned to Kent on 30 day convalescent leave after combat fatigue and a 39 pound loss. He reports from LCI duty off Leyte Mindoro and Iwo Jima references and reconnects with his wife and two children. Lieutenant Conley, wounded at Iwo Jima, is in a San Francisco hospital.
The Chestnut Burr for 1945 will be mailed this summer to students who attended three quarters or more this year or to anyone who completes payment. Lou Zaremba, business manager, said those with fewer than three quarters must pay 1.50 per quarter missed. servicemen and faculty pay the full 5. Payments go to the business manager.
The Penny Carnival invites entries by Friday May 4 with more booths needed for success. Betty Brown co chair announces yesterday and says suggestions for booths are being placed in Miss Brown's and Jim Pat's mail boxes.
The University V-E Day assembly is planned by the K-Vets led by president Ted Baskin. A meeting will be held Wednesday May 2 at 4 pm in room 108 Kent Hall to discuss V-E Day plans and Campus Night participation. The full celebration program will be announced soon.
University president George A. Bowman will address the Men’s Faculty club on May 7 at the Christian church. He will discuss the present status of building needs and the budget relation. On May 8 he speaks to the Junior Women’s club at Patton Memorial home on West Main Street.
Miss Nina Humphrey announces opening of the eighth annual Student Faculty Art Show on May 5. E L Novotny notes three honorary prizes in four fields watercolor oil graphic arts and crafts and sculpture. Roy Wilhelm of Akron is the guest judge. About 50 to 75 works are entered with roughly 40 chosen for display in Kent hall. Awards and final selections occur May 5 with display through May 18. Shirley Akeroyd chairs the event. show directed by the art school faculty.
Dr. Amos L. Heer warns that teachers planning to teach in the summer quarter must register their students at the training school by this week.
George Insche appoints Betty Off haus and Barbara McDowell as co chairmen of the first regu lar meeting of the newly elected Student Council. The council will assign university students to committees at its next session on May 7 and invites volunteers in the council office. Ingrid Tornberg coordinates an orchestra for Campus Night on May 26 as Cardinal Key and social committees prepare judges and rules.
Oliver Ocasek, chairman of the local United States Student Assembly chapter, will attend the third national USSA convention in New York City May 12 and 13. He will join a leadership institute, discuss growing membership, and elect officers, with up to forty dollars allocated for travel and expenses. The next to last USSA meeting is tonight in Kent Hall room 180 to elect next year’s officers.
A mixed chorus of independent students will enter the campus night competition under Esther Douglas, senior in the college of liberal arts. Douglas will meet interested singers in room 108 Kent hall today at 4 p.m. The independents in choir are urged to attend. Claude Miller, party chairman, said a meeting is planned. his committee will meet Thursday at 7 30 p.m. in the lounge at Engleman hall.
