The eighth annual Rowboat Regatta features an all university basket picnic at Brady Lake Park starting 11 a.m. Proceeds from $1 ride passes support a big project. Delts sell hot dogs ice cream coffee and more for the stadium drive.
Harold E. Stassen tops Varsity magazine national poll with 40 percent of votes, ahead of Dewey as second choice. The Daily States straw vote from April 23 and Varsity results are compared in today’s editorial on page two.
The university will award a record number of degrees at commencement on Saturday June 12. Four hundred bachelor degrees and fourteen masters degrees will be conferred, including 255 veterans among bachelor recipients and two veteran master’s graduates. The College of Education leads with 137 graduates, followed by Business 134 and Liberal Arts 129. Dean Earl E Harper will address the ceremony for the State University of Iowa.
Scholarships for the second annual Institute for Public Relations will be awarded at the June 15 16 campus event. KSU students receive the $15 registration fee coverage and must arrange their meals and housing. Attendees include PR directors and business executives from ten states. Applications go to Prof. Michael J. Radock in the school of journalism. Preference favors upperclass students pursuing PR and related fields.
Prof. William Taylor head of the school of journalism will judge the international news picture contest for press photographers in Atlantic City New Jersey tomorrow. The invitation to judge was extended by Joseph Costa president of the National Press Photographers Association sponsors of the annual convention. The contest titled Best Picture of My Life is open to press photographers only.
Gamma Tau Delta announces the first Greek sponsored tuition scholarship on campus. The fraternity will pay a year's full tuition for a deserving freshman entering in the fall. The university committee, led by Dr. H W Hudson, will choose the recipient based on character and high school scholarship, with no race color or creed considerations.
The eighth annual Daily Kent Stater Rowboat Regatta begins at 3 30 p m with 26 shell boats manned by 52 oarsmen and oarswomen racing on a triangular course. The event features independent men and women plus sororities, eight trophies, and a dean judged finish. A faculty versus Daily Stater crew intermission adds local rivalry to the day.
The drive totaling 10024 marks eight months of pledges by students and groups at the university. Davey thanks contributors and notes students pledged the full amount. Donations continue with about 43000 raised so far including outside donors. A stadium drive is now underway in Ravenna.
Registrar Emmet C. Stopher says summer registration will likely mirror last year with about 3000 students attending. He notes many students have not yet registered and that starting Monday fees can be paid in the treasurer’s office.
A community schedule lists 11 a.m. picnic with ride passes, 12:30 p.m. exhibition baseball game, 2:30 p.m. bathing beauty contest, 3:30 p.m. rowboat races, trophies after the last race, 5–7 p.m. rowboat dance with a $1 admission, 8:30 p.m. Kent Ellis club variety show at KSU auditorium with Herman Pirchner, first come, no reserve seats.
Roy Newsome announces the annual rowboat classic with Jack Ross as engineer. The starting line lies at Brady Lake park swimming beach under a wired mark. Entrants draw numbers from a hat for starting positions and races should finish under five minutes. The Regatta queen will present trophies, with Brady Lake fire department safety boat on standby led by Don Beck. Rules prohibit bumping or shoving and violations will be enforced.
Registration for Russian 160 taught by Prof. Bernard Mikofsky opens today and runs through next week. The offering targets students seeking language study and scholarly instruction from a noted department.
