The rule set allows local draft boards to grant deferments for students in jobs deemed essential to national health and safety. Most permanent deferments target engineering and technical fields, with boards deciding eligibility. Debate continues on lowering draft age to 18 and broadening safeguards for 19 to 25 year olds and some 4-F veterans.
Miss Elea nor Pudil of the school of music offers a vocal recital in the auditorium at 8. Her program includes Wolfe's Requiem set by Prof. Harold Miles, Frost poem The Road Not Taken, Hugo Wolfe with Goethe lyrics, and works by Bach Schubert Brahms Lane Shepherd and De Falla. Accompanist Miss Jane Corner joins piano. Free admission.
All scripts for the annual student production must be turned in to Ginny Vaughn by tomorrow. Scripts should be in typewritten outline form. The Council will vote on plots at its Wednesday meeting. The deadline was Jan 23 but extra time is now allotted for late entries.
Sophomores will hold a discussion on the year’s activities and plans for the next quarter at a 7 p m class meeting in 317 McGilvrey Wednesday.
Three fraternities and 85 individuals entered the second annual Beard growing contest sponsored by the Men’s Union. Proceeds go to the State Penny fund aiding servicemen. Kappa Sigma Alpha Phi Beta and Phi Beta Phi led early. a fourth trophy will honor the largest percent of members in final judging. Registration continues today and tomorrow from 10 to noon and 2 to 4 at Kent Hall area. Entry fees are 10 cents for individuals and 25 cents for groups.
Professor James A Fosdick announced the second annual print contest for the Creative Arts festival has begun. Judging will be by points focusing on the photographer's creative ability. Prints are due March 1 and must be submitted at the school of journalism office 114M.
Secretary Marshall and Assistant Secretary Rosenberg say older men would be called first if the draft age lowers. Senator Johnson proposes amendments to lower standards, call up nonveteran husbands, and induct 18-year-olds when necessary with older men prioritized, while Mrs. Rosenberg backs 18-year-olds before married men.
The selection of the honorary Cadet Colonel from 95 candidates will be held Feb 1 at 8 p.m. in the Student Union ballroom. A Wednesday practice at 3 p.m. in the Union will be led by Prof. E. E. Curtis. Ten finalists advance to the final selection on Feb 6.
The elections committee approved petitions for 22 candidates for the February 6 elections. For Student Council two senior posts go to Hague and Merkling with Tague and Timko also on the ballot. Junior seats list Thomas Cosetti Tangi and Middleton. sophomores Berzinec Stansbury Spencer Sitler and Harper. Men's Union openings include two juniors one sophomore and two freshmen with Wilson Conroy Fuhrman Kilbane junior candidates. sophomores Wise Wietland. freshmen Federman Warren Hayth. A special meeting is set for Thursday at 4 p m in 205SU.
