Mrs. James N. Holm, wife of the speech instructor, presses a tin can flat as students and affiliates join the salvage campaign. The effort promotes collecting scrap metal for wartime use, with fraternities sororities and co ops participating.
The senior class plans a winter quarter banquet and prom with dues set at 3.50 dollars and a March 1 payment deadline. Hank Rosen leads dance arrangements while Charles Eyster reports ring pricing at 15.50 for men and 13.50 for women with a 3.00 deposit.
Seven faculty members will begin instruction of a child study discussion group for Kent parents Thursday January 21 at the city building. Dr. John F Cuber associate professor of sociology will act as chairman. Instructors include Dr. James Laing Dr. Edna Lotz Dr. Alice Ryder Dr. Marion Van Campen Nona Jordan and Dr. Lena English.
Student directories listing names and classifications for the fall quarter are now available at the university bookstore for 25 cents. Announcement made yesterday by Donald Burson head of the mimeographing service.
The recital for Mr and Mrs Joeseph Lupkiewicz postponed from Tuesday to January 27 at 8 p m in the University auditorium was announced yesterday.
Dr. Karl C Leebrick approves Bill Lyon junior in education editor and George Cordea senior in business administration business manager for the Duchess magazine. They succeed Ligon Mayhew and Jack Collins who resigned in December over pay. The new chiefs promise humor and literary material and a bigger magazine with student contributed works. Preparations for the February issue are under way and a new subscription drive will be launched soon.
The cold spell has prepared the skating rink and toboggan slide. Larry Wooddell the maintenance superintendent said students have used both, but interest is lower than in past years due to the unusually severe cold.
Nine University women were introduced as new Cardinal Key members at a meeting last night. Named are Marge Wedding Virginia Reasch Ruth Greenwood Monetta Crookman Jean Zeiser Arlene Chamberlin Ruth West Wanda Baines and Doris Yarger with formal initiation planned soon according to President Carol Ann Sayers.
University timekeeping is at a standstill with two master clocks controlling all campus clocks. It will take 30 to 60 days to repair the universal system, as Standard Time Corporation technicians are unavailable due to military service. External help may be sought to begin work next week.
Invitations will go to 18 leading campus organizations to join the Office of War Activities. Peg Curry chairs the group and two faculty members will assist. Members will be selected from the University War committee and Women’s War council.
President K C Leebrick urged university deans and department heads to organize short war-related courses at yesterday's faculty meeting. Dr Allen W Cwen to lead a communications course with semaphore and Morse code, as requested by 38 reservists.
Robert Fairgraves of Columbus associate secretary of the YMCA at Ohio State University will speak at 4 p m today in room 219 Kent Hall. The talk substitutes for Walter Kilpatrick who cannot attend. Jean Garee YWCA president says the discussion will cover the role of students in a total war. Dr K C Leebrick will introduce the lecturer.
A notice requires all persons aged 18 to 45 who have been liable under the Selective Service act for six months or more to carry their classification card Form 57 and registration certificate Form 2. Those unable to produce the documents face fine or imprisonment or both.
Two men and two women from KSU will travel to the University of Pittsburgh for a debate conference. Bob Abbott and Harold Stern will affirm the federal union for the United Nations while Elizabeth Ersley and Adelaide Snyder will oppose. Prof. James N. Holm announced yesterday.
Reservists Ben Roberts Jimmie Rybak and Lee Hope posted the top averages among the 300 men in reserve programs. Roberts in liberal arts held a 3.95 grade with 19 hours, Hope in business earned 3.89 with 18 hours, and Rybak in education posted a perfect four point with 11 hours.
Glenn Moore Shaw, camouflage expert and muralist, will discuss camouflage methods at 2 p.m. in room 317 McGilvrey hall. The University and the Art club sponsor the open program announced by Prof. E. L. Novotny. Shaw did camouflage work in World War I and now teaches a government course at Cleveland School of Art.
Raymond E. Manchester announced that five of the university's six fraternities sent more than 100 invitations to 71 men this week while 36 students could not accept bids due to low point averages. A total of 104 bids were received, with many men obtaining multiple bids. Bidders must report to the dean of men to acknowledge receipt.
Miss Mona Fletcher, associate professor of political science, will speak before the Cuyahoga Falls Parent Teachers' association Monday afternoon.
