Ginny Vaughn announced the selection of thirty seniors for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. A committee of four students and two faculty members chose recipients on scholarship leadership and University service from 45 applications, with 30 going to the national board.
Dean Raymond E. Manchester, dean of men, announced the mid week hop for tomorrow night is canceled due to gym unavailability. He said plans for next week remain incomplete and the location will be announced later.
Kent State University sports face reductions as seven varsity athletes answered the draft. Notables include Dick Pitts, near the rushing yardage record, while John Witt Dick Over Frank Baznik exit next year’s squad. Lyle Schnittker ends two years of basketball and leaves for the draft as wrestling loses Jack Sweeney and Dale Folland to the Marines.
President Truman urged Congress to meet the total threat of Communism with higher taxes a broader draft price controls and vast military expansion. He presented a ten point program including military buildup selective service reform aid to the free world production and price stability farm labor housing education and tax boosts. He warned of full wartime mobilization if needed and said details would follow in later messages.
Open enrollment continues for the first half of the Problems of an Atomic Age course started January 4 and ending January 23. The two part series covers Nuclear Fission in Peace and Nuclear Fission and the Problems of War with evening classes and town meeting discussions at 317 McG. James R. Beck chairs the planning committee.
Organizations desiring space in the 1951 Chestnut Burr must submit contracts by January 17. Submissions are to be left at the Burr office in the Military Science building, per Sol Baltimore associate editor.
The Dean of Men Raymond E. Manchester selects this edition for all former students now in the armed forces. The Penny drive funds the service with campus organizations aiding. Readers are urged to submit names to Dean Manchester to avoid any exclusions.
Thirty two paintings by Kent State University professor Robert Morrow and his wife Barbara are shown in a two man exhibit at the Akron Art Institute. The show opened last Saturday and runs until February 4 with 16 works by each artist. Both are CIHS graduates with traveling scholarships and multiple Ohio awards.
The American Youth Hostels announce a scholarship contest offering an all expenses paid eight week hosteling trip in the British Isles Central Europe or France and the Rhineland for the best essay titled Why I Would Like to Go Hosteling in Europe. Open to US citizens 17 or older with a 1000 word limit and postmark by April 15 1951.
Prof. George R. Easterling an assistant professor of biology becomes the first faculty member called to active duty. He reported to Fort Eustis Virginia and will serve in the Adjutant General's Corps as a captain in the Army reserves.
