The final contest in the Men s Union is the cup race as the feature event. It will close Thursday at 4 p m. Roy Apple announced yesterday. Dr Walter Simmons, assistant professor of English, will judge all entries.
Dick Kerckhoff, Cleveland junior in liberal arts, was declared winner of the $25 U S war bond for the essay What We Are Fighting For In This War. Dr K C Leebrick will present the bond at a general university assembly Monday morning at 11 o clock.
The judging committee of four students and one faculty member cited five authors for honorable mention in addition to Kerckhoff first prize. Honorable mentions went to Albert Simon Cleveland sophomore Marguerite Cook Kent sophomore Pyts Mickey Dover John F. Bucek and Sgt. John R. Advent, former students now in the service. The five named above received honorable recognition.
Six candidates compete for Most Popular Woman and Man and two class council spots as University students vote today and tomorrow. Campaign materials must be removed from Kent hall by 8 am tomorrow, and no campaigning on the first floor is allowed.〉

Gamma Sigma Phi sorority won the Pan-Hellenic Scholarship Cup at the annual banquet held in the Congregational church for the first time in seven years. Hope Byrne received the cup from Miss Mary L. Smallwood as president, with Dr. Edna Lotz speaking on Scholarship. Candlelight installation marked new Pan-Hellenic officers Margarite Cook and others.
Merle E. Wagoner assistant professor of agriculture was named to represent the University on a committee working with the Ohio State Council of Defense. The group will recruit students for farm work to support food production for the armed forces as part of the Food for Victory program chaired by Gov. Bricker.
Merle E. Wagoner, director of student employment service, said yesterday that many part time jobs are open for men. Students seeking work should contact Wagoner at their earliest convenience.
The Kent Stater publishes Kerckhoff prize winning essay today and notes that the five authors winning honorable mention will have their essays appear in subsequent issues.
The contest announced five weeks ago was open to KSU students and alumni in the armed forces. Kerckhoff, The Kent Stater satirical columnist, won first place in the Men's Union editorial writing contest. Private Dover is stationed at Patterson Field Ohio and Sergeant Advent at Foster Field Texas.
The University board of trustees accepted the resignations of Dwight Sommers former instructor of music at the Training school and Miss Virginia Colton secretary in the dean of women's office at a regular meeting. Ervin Hoefler and Mrs. Helen Gray Stockdale of Ravenna were named to replace Sommers. no successor was named for Colton.
Only six students attended yesterday’s meeting for the V-1 class as the Navy aims to enlist underclassmen before May 1. Adrian Van Wyen said sophomores and freshmen under 20 may enlist with university approval, then proceed to Navy recruiting for further examinations. Enlistees can complete two college years before exam. sophomores see exams after 1.5 years. The Navy seeks 80,000 V-1 entrants. 35,000 may enter V-7 or other commissions, the rest to finish college before service.
