A ROTC backed program trains 24 girls in rifle handling led by M Sgt Andrew Roney at a military range. Three weekly sessions, six rifles and about 80 dollars in ammo are shared, with scores reaching 50 of 50 and several near tops. Some students show potential for higher level competition.
A long range program plants two thousand forest type trees this month on KSU's recently acquired southeastern grounds. About 1 500 shrubs and bushes will be added this year with trees acquired via the Ohio Forestry association. Governor Lausche urged public property planting and a nationwide goal of 10 million trees this year. Last year 2 500 trees and shrubs were planted, with prior plantings of 5 000 evergreens and 700 nut trees on outlying campus areas. Wooddell notes the effort aims to diversify species for beauty and biology study.
The university health center will follow the previous quarter hours with student access from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Emergency treatment will be available at all times.
Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic League approve open rushing this quarter. Four nights of open smokers April 21 to 24, three rushee groups per night, then six days of intensified rushing April 25 to 30 with a silence period April 30 to May 1. Sororities will circulate names via the Dean of Women's office and bids follow after two weeks from first invitation.
Students planning June graduation must order caps and gowns by April 15 at the University bookstore. The College of Education also reminds prospective June graduates to fully submit teaching certificate applications by the same deadline.
An all university party sponsored by Nu K political party will run 7 to 10 p m at the Portage County Labor Temple. Attendees meet at 6 30 p m at Prentice gate before marching around the campus then joining the dance. Skits by fraternities and sororities, refreshments and music by the Delta Upsilon band highlight the event. Betty Ann Schmid is director of recreation and Herb Ryan is master of ceremonies.
A five day workshop for Kent State university student teachers runs this week in Moulton Music room. Lectures and audio visual aids aid planning class work and discipline while students visit the Library for teaching materials. Anita Christ and Ferne Shipley head the workshop which will close Friday.
J Advisor Roy Apple acting as advisor to student publications is ordered to two weeks of active duty at Ft Meade Maryland. Apple is a lieutenant in Military Intelligence filling in for Dario Politella who is now on active duty with the Army in Korea.
The first annual workshop for high school language teachers will be held in the Union on Saturday April 19 with Charles F. Kirk in charge. Dr W G Meinke Mrs Thelma Lewis Walter Barbe C M Johnson and Virginia Markham headline the morning talks and a Students View Oral Language Activities panel.
Shakespeare returns to the KSU Auditorium for a four night run as University Theatre opens its spring season with As You Like It. It marks UTf history’s first Saturday opening and first musical element since 1950. Cast includes Paristeris, Bacon, Parish, Roberts, Matthews, Smith, Lioce, Aivaliotis, Beatty, Arnold, Zaderecky, Sidley. directed by Earl E. Curtis. Tickets 60 cents without an activity card.
