Republican candidates listed for coroner associate judge and treasurer in Jasper County with action to the August 3 primary 1920. Names include Dr John F Morgan Wm H Black Jr and Charles E Wise.
Mrs Mary Hendricks widow of A H Hendricks died at Alba on Monday June 7 at 10 am while visiting her daughter. She had lived in Jasper County over fifty years and suffered ill health after partial paralysis three years ago. The funeral was at M E Church with Rev D E Dowless officiating. Surviving children include Samuel and John W Meesres in Los Angeles and Anabel Beagle of Alba along with a brother and sister and several grandchildren. Her long residence and devotion to family were noted with community sympathy extended.
The old J C Pitts farm of 253.56 acres near Jasper sold at auction to settle the J C Pitts estate. W B Crane of Carthage bought in the bid at 97 dollars per acre for Andrew and Fred Gresham. Heirs are Mrs Lucy Pitts and sons L B and H F Pitts. The present tenant Charles Bradshaw will stay until March. The land once belonged to George Gresham, father of the new owners.
Wm H Black Jr of Jasper county announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for associate judge of the county court in the eastern district. Born in Carthage 38 years ago, he grew up here, educated in Carthage schools, and owns a farm four miles southeast of Ore. Widely known in the eastern district as a substantial progressive farmer, he pledges to pursue a sound business administration for Jasper county if nominated and elected.
Charles E. Wisegarver of Carthage is announced as a Republican candidate for Jasper County treasurer in the August 3 primary. A longtime deputy under J. T. B. Yan and later under S. Nix, he stayed in public service and promises careful, honest handling of public business. He and his wife have two children and live on South Garrison Avenue.
Reverend Roy Bowers and his wife were honored at a surprise gathering at his father's home Wednesday evening. A crowd of friends attended as an impromptu program unfolded with an orchestra, songs, and encores. The couple were invited to fish using improvised tackle, each cast yielding a household item as a playful catch. Ice cream and wafers were served as socialists mingled with attendees from Lan Amer, Carthage, and local names listed in a festive sendoff to newlyweds.
