Pioneer Woman Recalls Jal Ranch Life and Origin of Son of a Gun
This reminiscence describes life around Jal in the 1890s. The narrator recounts a cattle accident near a tent housing a sleeping baby, details neighboring ranches Half Circle Two’s Bar Two Mule Shoe and locals like W C Crochran, and explains how the nickname son of a gun for cowboy stew originated. The piece mixes memory with notes on early settlers and the Mule Shoe headquarters.
