A Republican tour visited Jal on Saturday morning as Maurice Miera campaigner spoke at a high school session. C. E. Brown introduced candidates including George Martin John Frenger John Watson Frank Stephens and John Schultz to voters.

Mrs Rush Recovers After Hospital Stay

Mrs. Rush left the local hospital this week after a shock incident when Jimmie Garner allegedly tried to take her grandson. She suffered no serious injuries and is reported to be all right now.

Panthers Edge Seagraves In 7-6 Thriller

Jal Panthers battled Seagraves at Seagraves and won 7 to 6 in a tense game. They host Monument next, with Artesia game moved to October 18 and set for 7:30 p.m. at home.

Benson Grocery In Bennett Burns For $4000 Loss

The W F Benson grocery store cafe and home in Bennett near Jal was destroyed by fire early Tuesday. The family escaped with nothing but saved the scout uniform and ore accounts. Estimated damages ranged four to eight thousand dollars, with insurance covering the business and home. The El Paso Natural Gas Camp alarm prompted calls as volunteers from Jal reached the four mile distance too late. Benson had operated the store for three years building it into a stucco structure with a cafe.

Odd Fellows Draw Record Crowd For Initiation

The Odd Fellows lodge held a Monday night meeting with the third degree conferred on Ear Kloggin. A record crowd attended, the largest since the lodge’s founding. R. Wilson, past grand, plans to depart November 16 for the Grand Lodge session in Roswell as the sole official member from the Eas Geesees area.

Maney Band to Headline Jal High Dance Night

Jal Band Mothers organize a November 5 high school auditorium dance with Ted Maney's Rhythm Aires seven piece orchestra. Proceeds aim to fund a band trip, following a Las Cruces trip and state contest success led by Walter Anderson who won a snare drum solo and a scholarship to Hardin-Simmons University.

Burke Appointed Honorary Colonel of Governor’s Staff

Superintendent J. L. Burke Jr. of the Jal schools was named honorary Colonel of the Governor’s staff by Governor John E. Miles in an official announcement this week. Burke’s latest title adds to his existing leadership role in the Jal school system.

Man Convicted Of Striking Woman Ninety Day Jail Term

Justice Ralph Baird began duties as Peter Bish’s successor and presided over the case of Jimmie Garner found guilty of assault and battery. Garner received the maximum ninety days in jail and a $100 fine after pleading guilty for striking Mrs. Harvey Rush and knocking her unconscious. He was arrested by town marshal Ed Reeves and transported to Lovington for sentencing. Garner has recently resided in Jal and Kermit and had been jailed previously for drunkenness and disturbing the peace.

Last Rites Held For Mrs. Whitten Pioneer Lea County

Funeral for Henrietta Whitten aged 68, Lea County resident for 26 years, was conducted by Charles R. Hammer of the Church of Christ. She left nine children, five surviving, and was interred beside husband J. W. Whitten in Monahans. A stroke on Sunday and Monday preceded her death. A large Monahans attendance and floral offerings accompanied the service.

Mrs. Gibson Returns Home With New Daughter

Mrs. A. W. Gibson arrives back in Jal with her week old daughter born in a Kerrmit hospital. Both mother and baby are reported doing well. Boy Scouts entertain with self produced color silent reels showing New Mexico history and sights from their state tour last summer.

City council rejects state budget and seeks rehearing

Jor City Council met in regular session at city hall and refused to approve the state budget, saying it does not cover bond obligations. They did approve the state engineer budget for the water system. Marshal Ed Reeves was given overdue occupation tax collections to recover in coming weeks. No other actions were taken.

Ely Case Moves for New Trial in Winkler County

Charles W. Ely Jr. awaits retrial after a district judge granted a change of venue to Kermit. Ely was sentenced to the electric chair for the murder of Earl Burker, a Red Monahans nightwatchman, but the Court of Criminal Appeals reversed and remanded. The November 12 date marks the new trial in Kerznit.

Rotary Initiates New Member At Tuesday Luncheon

Jal Rotarians met and dined at their regular Tuesday luncheon at the Community church this week. Robert Bodemiller was introduced as a new member by Rev. G. L. Keever and Bob Holon was a guest. After a general program the board met for a short business session. Rev. J. W. Hollis gave the invocation at the opening.

Baby and Pre-School Clinic At Jal School

Miss Lena McDaniel, school nurse, led a well baby and pre-school clinic Tuesday at the Home Economic Building Jal school with Dr. Badger of Hobbs assisting in examining children under one year old. Francis Davis visits Big Spring this week, stopping with friends, Mrs. George Baker.
