A Jal high school note honors Mary Lou on her seventeenth birthday. Mary Lou, a popular senior pep squad leader and Sub Delts member, is described amid local gossip about John Benton and school life. The writer laments declining advertising support and hints at a subscription push.
Three children from Pender Edwards Ramsey were bitten by a dog this week. Deputy Sheriff Elmer Turner arranged for the dog to be tied up for observation. If symptoms appear the dog will be killed and its head sent to Austin for testing.
Pearl B. McGlathery announced Governor Miles’s plan that county clerks statewide will oversee the draft registration starting October 16. Clerks will pick sub registrars from recent primary judges, poll clerks, and counting judges if needed, with six from the group likely chosen. All men aged 21 to 35 must register at the Selective Service office regardless of residence.
Jal Panthers head to Seagraves for their third game of the season after a 33 0 victory over Tatum. Probable starters include Hamlin Brininstool Huffaker Erwin Neville Rushe Tabb Benton Justis Brooks Moore.
Governor John E. Miles proclaims October 16 1940 as Registration Day under the Selective Training and Service Act calling for time off in state schools and offices to facilitate registration for men aged 21 to 35. He names local boards appeal officers and physicians and urges civic cooperation across New Mexico with Santa Fe as the proclamation date.
Mrs. Hugh Ward received medical treatment at the local hospital this week. Jess Edwards Jr. suffered severe calf lacerations after a dog bite, also this week.
Harvey Rush was struck on the head by a young man in khakis who fled toward a nearby Negro town. Mrs. Rush, hospitalized in semi conscious condition, mumbled about her grandson and the assailant remained at large as officers continued the manhunt Wednesday night.
The well baby and pre school clinic will start at 8 am Tuesday in the Home Economics Building of the school house. Mrs Lena McDaniel school nurse urged mothers to bring babies under one year. Dr Badger of Hobbs will preside.
Odd Fellows Lodge Hall will host the Selective Service Registration office with working quarters. All men aged 21 to 35 must register on October 16, a single day to prevent crowding. Young men are urged to go as soon as possible to avoid delays.
The CAA ground course finished Saturday night with nine of seventeen enrolled taking exams at Hobbs High School. Highest grade by W. B. Filler earned a about $350 scholarship. Others passing included Johnnie Connell Bill Hollis and Phillip Henderson. Mrs James Bennett had tonsils removed in a local hospital Saturday morning and is reported feeling fine.
James A Griffin 55 district fore man for Humble Pipeline died of a heart attack in Hobbs New Mexico on Tuesday morning. Interment followed in Iowa Park after funeral services at Odessa. He moved from Iowa Park to Wink and then Odessa in 1987 with his wife and son James A Jr. attending relatives cited include J B Smith L H Riley Sam Moore and others at the Odessa service.
The State highway from the Texas line north to Jal received a new white center line. A stop sign has been installed at each Jal intersection leading onto the highway.
Jerry Harshaw, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harshaw of the Texas Company, narrowly escaped death after eating over a box of aspirin. She was rushed to hospital where the aspirin was pumped from her stomach and she recovered after a period of illness.
