Baptists Sketch Jal Church Structure and Early History

The Jal Baptist congregation traces its roots through multiple reorganizations starting in 1927 and 1933. Rev. Studenbroke became pastor after a meeting at the Mounts home with eighteen members on January 25, 1933. Plans show a large auditorium, seventeen classrooms, a pastor study, secretaries office, nursery, kitchen, and a balcony.

Civic Club Builds Jal Church and Youth Programs

Rev Kidd and Rev Studen led a revival as Jal’s Baptist Church grew from a remodeled old building to a planned all brick veneer church. The congregation, now 225, supports Boy Scout and Cub Pack groups, a clean–up drive, a city dump plan, and a National Rifle Club. Andrews And Beckham Are Old Timers In Jal

J M Andrews and Billy Beckham are among Jal’s first settlers who still live there. Andrews recalls arriving in the 1880s and says Beckham was already present when he arrived. He notes misprints distort his stories and that he has ranching ties in New Mexico and Winkler County.

Jal set to celebrate big day with bands and events

The Jal celebration opens with a 10 a.m. concert by the Texas Tech touring band in the Jal High gym. A parade concert follows at noon with West Texas and New Mexico high school bands. Mayor H H McAllister presides at 1 30 p m dedication. Fire department demonstrations at 4 p m lead to a school barbecue.

City completes Jal water system takeover and tests

Waterworks work continues as a dynamiting crew and bed rock drilling finish the mains. Within 40 days after starting, the project is completed and the city takes over the new system after the old Jal Water Company was absorbed in January. The present system replaces the ranch area’s old well supply, the Roe Newberry installation of 1929, and the Hazeltine operated Jal Water Company prior to city control.

Traveling Texas Tech Band to Play in Jal Wednesday

The celebrated Texas Technological College band from Lubbock will perform in Jal on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The group has logged over 15 000 miles in five years and is on its 12th concert tour with trips across California New Mexico Oklahoma and Austin Texas. The band is praised for its Minute Man marching ability and sharp red and black uniforms. About seventy members will perform a varied program including solos and duets. Local businesses prepare for celebrations with a bowling alley and a skating rink to open soon.
