Waterworks Dedication Draws 4000 Attend Jal Celebration
Jal paused oil and gas output to dedicate its new waterworks with 4000 attendees from West Texas and New Mexico. The day featured a Tex co band concert, mass high school band performances, parades from Jal Eunice Hobbs Lovington and Kermit, and trophy cups for each participating band. Ceremonies were broadcast from the water tower foot with master of ceremonies J. L. Burke and directors Eric Maxwell Travis Shaw Hap Meyers leading the mass band.

Tree Growing Clubs Enter Jal School Contest
J L Burke superintendent of Jal schools organizes a baby tree growing club for students. 300 one year old trees of five kinds are provided and each room entering earns a tree per twenty students. Trees must be planted and watered regularly. contest ends October 15 with bronze medals for room champions and a gold medal for overall top grower.

Street Work Sought By Club in Jal
The Civic Club met at the Methodist Church and, after success with the waterworks celebration, turned to street improvements. John Connell proposed a WPA project to repair streets and a five member committee was named to meet the city council. The group includes George Davis as chair, Connell, Ralph Baird, Rev. Co V Butler and Walter Pendleton. A tree planting contest by students was discussed but not decided.

Book Fund Diversion Is Opposed

Grandpa Duncan Dies in Jal City
M L Duncan age 83 known as Grandpa Duncan died after a period of weakness and was buried in Cooper cemetery after funeral services by Rev McClendon. He lived in Jal for many years and was said to have known Jessie James. Survived by two daughters in Jal. his death noted as missed by townspeople during the two weeks prior.

Artesia Man Awarded Park Contract
M. J. Hadley of Artesia received the contract from the city council to plant and landscape Jal's new park. About 195 trees plus evergreens and shrubs will be installed with red rock walks and a central flower bed. The bid includes replacement if trees fail to grow, and the park sits on the block north of the business section near the new city well.

Six Tests Staked As Five Flows Are Reported
Six completions and drilling ahead of a deep test below 6800 feet were reported in oil circles this week. The Britt B-10 No. 2 by Continental Oil in section 10-20-87 flowed 92 barrels of oil per day and 745 barrels of water. Standard of Texas State No. 3 flowed 30 barrels per hour from 4685 feet. Gulf Ramsey No. 4 flowed 245 barrels in five hours from 8860 feet. Gulf McCormack No. 7 flowed 128 barrels in 24 hours from 3765 feet. Gulf Stuart No. 6 is noted in NW 11-5-87.

Odessa Goodwill Tourists Promote Hereford Show
A band of Odessa civic circle members visited Jal Wednesday to advertise the Sandhills Hereford show to be held March 24 25 and 26. The motorcade stopped in Jal and its members talked with businessmen about the stock show. Mrs Lane Turner’s mother and brother and her sister in law from Cane spent the weekend here.
