Postoffice Has Had Many Moves
The Jal post office began six miles east of the current location after petitions by W. Justis and others led to a 1910 establishment. Justis served as postmaster and delivered mail by horseback to Kermit. in 1914 he became U.S. land commissioner and his wife served as postmaster until her 1928 death. In 1923 J A Stuart was appointed.

Modern School Grows From Shanty Near Hubbs-Justis
The first Jal school began as a two room frame on a hill by Highway 18 near the Hubbs Justis water works. It closed for four years before 1927 when oil was found and Miss Ora Mae Medlin taught. In 1928 the school moved to its current site, added a room, and hired two more teachers.

Oil Brought Jal New Life in Early Discoveries
The town of Jal grew from a single general store and post office after the Rhodes No. 1 State permit discovery in 1927 drilled by the Donley brothers.
