The town of Jal marks its second annual Water Works Celebration with a lighter program than last year. A chuck wagon dinner by five fire volunteers will feature son of a gun fried steaks brown beans buns and coffee on the vacant lot north of city hall. Proceeds fund a new fire truck and a big town dance follows with guests from the surrounding area joining in the festivities.
The Odd Fellows plan to begin construction on their hall next week after securing funds. The lodge hall will measure about thirty by sixty feet and include three small rooms in the back. Plans were approved at a Monday meeting with a contractor asked to provide an estimate. Expected ready date is within a month, after which the Rebekahs will organize and hold regular meetings.
Five thousand Jal residents joined an all day celebration marking the new water system. City officials merchants and the Jal Flare organized the event with a broadcast and a big barbecue as highlights. The crowd anticipated a bright future for Jal.
The Jal Water Works Celebration features a Firemen's Ball at the High School Gym with Jimmie Durant leading his twelve piece Roswell orchestra. Tickets cost 1.50 in advance, and proceeds fund fire truck insurance. A large regional crowd is expected, with Durant noted for Hobbs and the President's Ball.
Jal Waterworks celebration gains momentum as Band Mothers raise funds for the Las Cruces trip. On March 29 they sell coffee and two pies per mother and display silk ribbons reading Jal Water Works Celebration to boost publicity.
Rapid progress on the El Paso Natural Gas plant northeast of town with construction now thirty days in and sixty more days designated for completion. Hundreds of men work in three six hour shifts performing all kinds of tasks.
A C Scott about 81 years old died late Wednesday. A resident of Jal he lived on land near Cooper. He had long illness and was expected to be buried in Cooper cemetery Thursday. He is survived by two children Allan and Lois Scott of the country south of the Continental camp.
The Speakers Club met on Thursday with thirty members present. John Benton filled in as toastmaster for the absent Johnnie Connell. Talks covered safety and accident prevention, US relations with Japan and China, natural gas and resources, and trucking industry rules. Mayor H H McAllister delivered an extemporaneous speech and Malcolm Madera discussed his Pennsylvania trip to purchase a plane. R B Lassater crushed two fingers while cranking his car.
Jal golfers seek a permanent course closer to town. J M Whitworth reports efforts to locate a near site while Hugo Just offers to build five miles out on Eaton Ranch with a swimming pool if a clubhouse is built. The club awaits a suitable location.
Five new drilling locations listed around Jal at sections in Nexco oil field. Wells include Anderson & Prnch No 22 Wells and Gulf No 2 Woolworth with depths from 3152 to 660 feet. Mrs Ray OGwin and husband recently moved to Denver City and plan to attend Jal Firemen's Ball Friday.
