American Legion met at the Monterrey Hotel Monday night and reorganized electing George Davis commander and J M Haid vice commander. They plan to meet regularly and keep dues paid up to date. A group will go to Hobbs this week for guidance on this year’s program. Next meeting is March 7.
M. L. Moore started work Thursday as city Water Works superintendent replacing Brooks Brininstool who will assist briefly. Brininstool will finish Friday and retire from duties. Mrs Marguerite Shaw remains secretary and bookkeeper earning 40 a month plus 10 from Malcolm Madera. The new superintendent’s salary is 125 monthly. Woodrow Bailey will audit year end books.
The New Mexico Electric Service Company announced the purchase of Benson's small light unit supplying Bennettville. Construction on a line to Bennettville began Tuesday and is expected to wrap up around April 1. Mr Benson previously held half interest in the Strateway Bar. Mr and Mrs J M Foster travel to Chickasha Oklahoma to visit Mrs Foster's seriously ill grandmother and plan to return Sunday if she improves.
The band will enter three contests in Las Cruces on March 29 and 30 band director R L Meyers said They will march perform in the concert and sight read Walter Anderson enters as snare drum soloist LaVerne Norfleet plays flute and Iva Lee Cauley performs clarinet solo Christine Edwards enters saxophone solo Frances Butler competes in the twirling contest
The Odd Fellows said they hope to announce soon the start of construction of a 30 by 60 foot building on the lot they purchased last week where Bill Collums Garage was located.
W F Benson and W L Boyd announce the opening of the Strateway Bar with Benson, a local grocer from Benetville, and Boyd relocating from Fort Worth. H P Inglehart helps Boyd. the senior basketball team heads to Roswell district tournament after this week.
A report lists numerous accidents over two weeks around Jal. Workers suffer burns from hot oil and gas stoves, head and neck injuries, fractured legs, and other injuries. Several cases required hospital stays and first aid before transfer to other facilities.
Helen Jackson, daughter of Mr and Mrs C A Jackson, fell while mowing this week, injuring her knee and spraining her foot leaving her nearly unable to walk. Bill Eidson of El Paso visited Mrs Dwight Vinson. Dorothy Barnett, sister to Mrs Jack Noss, married this week by Rev Keever. John Connell plans to go to Hobbs Thursday night for Rotary Ann's night. Mrs Connell to accompany him.
Band mothers raise money to send the Jal Band to Las Cruces on March 29 for the state contest. A five piece negro orchestra from Hobbs led by Mose McClain plays Friday at City Hall. Aunt Samantha Rules the Roost will be performed Tuesday, both events promise entertainment and profit for the band fund.
The Speakers Club will meet at the Community Church tonight after a misreported Thursday gathering. Lieutenant Governor James Murray is expected to attend with several distinguished guests. Johnnie Connell will be toastmaster and George Davis, J. W. Cowan, and Mrs Davis may speak. Tickets released. Clarence Roach handles sales. new members welcome.
The Rotary Club held its regular meeting with a luncheon and speeches by visiting guests. Principal speaker Mr Diehl addressed “Vocational Guidance in the Home.” Mr and Mrs R A Bond of Sulphur Oklahoma visited the Connells and spent Tuesday night.
A city garbage truck caught fire twice in recent days due to burning garbage accidentally dumped by a worker. Firefighters arrived quickly and extinguished the blaze before it caused disaster, with the latest incident near Dinwiddie’s Apartments.
A Band Mothers meeting is called for Tuesday at 2 pm at the high school. Every parent and other interested in the band are urged to attend.
Ike Bergolofsky came back Wednesday evening from Dallas where he spent the past week on shopping and business. He also visited his wife during the trip.
