Jal marked the completion of its water system with an all day program that drew five thousand residents. A city broadcast by officials and a large barbecue highlighted the event, and merchants and the Jal Flare helped make the day memorable as the city looks to a brighter future.
The Firemen's Ball at Jal High School Gymnasium features Jimmie Durant and his twelve piece Roswell orchestra. Proceeds fund town fire truck insurance and overdue notes. Tickets are $1.50, available in advance from any firefighter, with a large regional crowd expected.
Jal Waterworks celebration gains momentum as band mothers raise funds for a Las Cruces trip. On March 29 they sell coffee and two pies per contributor at Modern Tailor Shop and offer silk ribbons reading Jal Waterworks Celebration to shoppers.
Construction near town advances rapidly with thirty days elapsed and sixty more designated for completion. Hundreds of workers toil in three six hour shifts at the plant north east of town, performing varied tasks as the project moves forward.
A C Scott aged about 81 and longtime Jal resident died late Wednesday afternoon after a prolonged illness. He lived on land near Cooper and was expected to be buried Thursday in Cooper cemetery. Survived by two children Allan and Lois Scott who reside south of the Continental camp.
The Speakers Club met Thursday with thirty members present. John Benton acted as toastmaster in place of absent Johnnie Connell. Talks covered safety and prevention of accidents, US relations with Japan and China, natural gas resources, and trucking industry rules and regulations. Mayor H H McAllister gave an impromptu speech followed by Malcolm Madera recounting a trip to Pennsylvania and his new plane.
R. B. Lassater injured two fingers on his right hand this week when a car he started kicked back briefly. He sought medical care for the painful reaction and potential damage to the digits.
Jal golf club seeks a permanent, nearer site for a course. J M Whitworth reports lease limits on current facility and desire for quick access to town. Hugo Just’s offers a five mile out of town course with swimming pool if a clubhouse is built, but no site secured yet.
New oil field update lists five new Jal area locations with well numbers and sections. It notes Old Well depth to 38380 feet and multiple drilling entries including Culberson Irwin Langford and Skelly No. 5 Ellen Sims with depths from about 1050 to 38152 feet.
Mrs Ray O'Gwin and her husband recently moved to Denver City. They plan to attend Jal's Fireman's Ball Friday, with Mrs O'Gwin visiting this week.
