Gene Autry stars in a two day Rex Theatre run of South of the Border, a colorful musical western based on the popular song. Lupita Tovar headlines the señorita role with Mary Lee and June Storey in key parts, Smiley Burnette providing laughs, and a cast including Clare Clorey Duncan Renaldo and others.
Nada Ruth Buffington and La Nova House hosted a five o clock Valentine tea Wednesday afternoon for the Sub-Debs and friends. Guests enjoyed tea then attended the box upper at the school house wives in the junior class.
A large gathering attended the Methodist Missionary Society meeting on Monday afternoon. Rev B L Nance spoke about the revival assistance and Mrs J M Haid presented the World Outlook program with help from Mrs Ray Spear and Mrs L Wilson. Spear reviewed Methodist School and Community House and Wilson discussed Young J Allen. Social closed the event with hostesses Mesdames Davis Murray and Beckham.
Mrs W B Lindsey hosted a surprise birthday dinner for her husband Friday evening. Guests included Mr and Mrs Harold Hubbard and daughter Bonnie, Mr and Mrs Bob Lindsey, Roy Lindsey, the honoree, and their daughter Jerry. A Valentine colored cake served as centerpiece and gifts were given.
Kermit Masons announce a Washington Day banquet and program inviting Jal and other New Mexico residents to attend. The event begins at 6 a.m. with a morning meal and continues with an evening program in the school auditorium.
The Sunday Lesson Sermon in Christian Science churches centers on Soul and Spirit. Golden Text from Leviticus 26:11 12 proclaims God dwelling among His people and guiding them. Corinthians passage notes death conquered by immortality with Life as Spirit over false sense of Soul. Eddy text emphasizes Spirit as Life and immortality, unfolding spiritual truth.
Rov C Y Butler of Iraan formerly Jal is in town for a revival and spoke at assembly. He engaged the cub scouts with Saturday hikes, delighting the young people. The Lenning family thanks friends for kindness during the illness and death of their father and grandfather, and Earl Ray and wife of Long Beach visit John Benton’s family. Mrs Earls is an Italo Oil Company official.
Members of the Baptist Church attended a Workers Conference in Hobbs this week. The morning service focused on missionary reports, followed by a luncheon and a Margaret Fund program. A playlet described the fund, which supports missionaries' children’s education. Attendees from Jal included George Sloan and numerous church members.
The league held a Sunday night meeting with twenty two members attending. They planned to participate in the evening services Sunday night. Frances Bradford will read the scripture and O C Hare will speak on Things I Believe and Do.
Mesdames George Davis Ralph Baird L M Dooley and Mrs Walter Pendleton spent Tuesday in Hobbs on a shopping outing with social notes.
