A column recalls a past sponge cake tale linked to Mack, then notes Marc Humphries led a school board election in Jal, sweeping three candidates, two as dark horses, amid lively barroom chatter at McAllister's. Voters cast up to 73 ballots as speculation swirled about motives.
Hal Betty cut his left thumb on four pieces of glass this week, severing an artery. He received emergency treatment at a local hospital and was later reported to be getting along fine with the splint removed.
A Tuesday afternoon election filled three vacancies on the local school board with write-ins. Frank Knight won a three year term with 73 votes, H F Steen earned two years with 70 votes, and Walter Pendleton secured one year with 60 votes. The on ballot candidates drew under ten votes combined. New board members replace J W Cowan Nick Carter and Pendleton who re elected himself. Election judges were L J Calley J R Sparling and Mr and Mrs W R Cunningham.
Rotary Club welcomed Sheriff Horace Owens Judge Tom Finn J H Sikes scout master John Eddy and twelve Boy Scouts as honor guests. J M Whitworth gave a life rambling sketch and recalled his Kansas wife. New members John Benton Homer Pender and G L Keever joined. Lee Robinson will lead next week’s vocational program.
Services were held at Kolar chapel Hobbs for Johnathan Roy Lenning 64 who died at his son's home S R Lenning. He was buried in Hobbs cemetery after Rev C A Clark officiated. Lenning had lived here with his son and is survived by a daughter Mrs J C Morrison a son Donald E Lenning and other sons and daughters in Artesia Caddo Griffin and Kilgore.
The Speakers Club met Thursday night at the Methodist Church hall with Rev G L Keever as toastmaster. Rupert Madera spoke on horses and dogs, Mrs M L Dooley presented Nilan a product launched in 1988 to hit the market in April.
El Paso Natural Gas project crews push ahead on the 20 inch trunk line with day and night work. More men join as meter setting on the separator veins finishes. A telephone line to the main office is being laid and lighting installed at the new plant site.
The Jal Area reports one completion and seventeen drilling wells for the week ending February 3. Notable drills include Skelly No 5 Ellen Sims, Skelly No 2L State, Gulf No 2 Woolworth, and several Texas Co and Anderson and Prichard wells with depths ranging from about 650 to 3618 feet. Multiple wells list sections and townships in 25e to 37e, with details on drilling depth and locations.
The bearded international basketball stars of House of David played two games against Jal teams to a large crowd. In the afternoon they beat the high school and faculty team 46 to 32, then defeated the El Paso Natural Gas team 17 to 43 at night. The event benefited the Jal library fund.
Beginning this week the Boy Scouts began their observance of national anniversary with a six day program. The key event tonight is a Father and Son Banquet as part of the observance marking the thirtieth anniversary in America.
