Merchants report strong trade with full houses and brisk store business while some blame hard times. Hunter Hughes opens cash only grocery hardware line. Phillips 66 fills station and Strateway Bar revive under new management. Revivals attract crowds at Community Church as teens attend.
Jal basketball team plans to leave next Thursday February 29 for Roswell to enter a three day district tournament. The community is invited to watch Jal boys play some of the best games this year while Rev and Mrs W H Morris rushed to Abilene Wednesday after Mrs Norris received word her mother was seriously ill.
Prizes were awarded Tuesday in the school chapel for the baby tree growing contest co sponsored by the school and the local Rotary Club. Gold medal went to Dorothy Lee Rush with a tree 8 ft 5 in tall. Silver medals were given to grade winners Mary Becker Donald Gillet Betty Lou Mosley Delma Buffington Hubert Johnson Bob Bart Pender Gerald Yielding Richard Goodner.
Hollis Scarborough 50 of Jal was found dead by hanging near the U S Veterans Hospital in Waco where he was an inmate. Justice of the Peace McKie Walker ruled death by suicide. He had been charged with murder in the death of his father W F Scarborough near Kermit last June 19. Surviving are a widow, a son, a daughter, five sisters and others in Midland and El Paso. Funeral arrangements pending. burial in National Cemetery at San Antonio sought. He was declared insane after a Kermit hearing August 9.
Jal city council met in a special session to hire a new water superintendent after Brooks Brininstool announced resignation effective March 1. Moore, from El Paso Natural Gas, was given a trial run and appeared most qualified among nine applicants. Brininstool had overseen the system since city takeover.
Jal Fire Department renews annual water celebration on March 8 at the High School gym with a promised first rate orchestra possibly from Roswell. Proceeds will help pay for a fire truck as tickets go on sale and a chuck wagon supper precedes the dance inviting Jay citizens and nearby towns. Jay Haynes opens Phillips 66 station on the Jal highway offering full service and promotes grease and wash jobs.
The report notes completion of a 1100 barrel well and four completions in the Jal Area with 32 drilling rigs active. Locations include Gulf Cole, Repollo State, Peters & Elder Humble State, Stamili & Martin Glier, with completions such as Leonard No. 1 Johns and Gulf No. 8-0 Christmas. Other wells listed include Anderson Prich No. 5 Stuart and No. 12 Wi Isenw, Culbertson & Irwin Noa Langford, and Gulf No. 2 Woolworth. Continued on page four.
