YTA Ree Chitwood pins a playful poem about carrots at Frank's Place and notes the leap day birthday she shares with others born on February 29. She invites readers to send names and addresses of fellow leap day birthdays to Jay Flare while humorously lamenting the vegetables in her meals.
Four talks were given at the Speakers Club dinner in the Community Church rec hall. Toastmaster J. L. Burke Jr introduced the speakers, with Matt Blair presenting on Side Lig followed by continuation.
State police checked brakes lights and drivers licenses this week. Drivers without a valid sticker on the car were stopped and given a ticket. Testing station was busy issuing stickers and the port of entry issued licenses.
A two week revival continues at the Jal Methodist Church with Rev Y Butler of Kaan preaching. Assisting are Rev B L Nance and local pastor Rev G L Keever as meetings run through February 25 with a cordial invitation to all.
Several oil leases were recorded in the courthouse this week for the Jal Area. Included were Wes-Tex Oil Company ne 1-4 ne 1.4 sec 25-23s8-36e and Drilling and Exploration Company se 1-4 sec 12-24s-35e.
City Council discussed passage of an ordinance for a new Lea County Gas Company franchise and planned using the original franchise with one added section. Jail cells donated by Lea County will be transported from Lovington to the city hall for installation, with materials trucked in. Water Superintendent Brooks Brinin should provide an itemized January expenditure report. heavy cold weather expenses left little treasury for bond payments.
Eighty one men and boys attended the Father and Son banquet at the Methodist Church as part of Boy Scout Week celebrating the thirtieth anniversary in America. J L Burke spoke on scouting experiences while Jimmie Gammill discussed the meaning of Scout uniform. Service certificates were presented to key leaders and Tenderfoot badges awarded to sixteen scouts. A nine pound son was born this week to Mr and Mrs May.
Jimmie Gammill will referee a basketball tournament in Barstow on Friday and Saturday. The event brings officials and teams together for two days of games in the local venue.
Weekly report shows Jal Area activity with three completions and two new locations. Wells listed include Shasta No 4 Woolworth and Gulf No 2 Woolworth with drilling details, and multiple completions such as Central No 8 B27 and Texas Co No 1 Y State. Gas and oil production notes are noted alongside depths and locations in sections 28 to 37e.
Brooks Brininstool notified the city council of his resignation as water superintendent effective after February 15. He will take another position but remain with the village while a new water chief is secured. He has led the system since its completion last March amid frozen lines and water outages during cold weather. No candidate has yet been brought before the board.
Rotary Club met at the Community Church with seven visitors. County welfare agent Mrs Feldhammer delivered the luncheon address on preventing delinquency through proper training and child welfare. R A Earl of Long Beach California praised the talk and discussed California measures.
Mrs Hoot Gibson suffered a knee injury and a cut lip in a rear collision on Main Street in front of the Woolworth Hotel Saturday night. The accident occurred when a vehicle from a side street pulled into the Gibson car causing the crash. No serious injuries were reported though Gibson’s new car was badly damaged.
