Tests of the water storage tank will be made Thursday before the top is placed on the 50 000 gallon affair. With the body completed the pipe to the tank was finished Wednesday and water will be pumped in to test for leaks.
Mr and Mrs Hal Smith narrowly escaped a major blaze when a smoldering bed in their east Jal home rekindled. Fire fighters arrived quickly to save the structure, with losses pegged just under 200 dollars including a new bedroom suite and monogrammed linens. Officials cite a cigarette as the probable cause and warn of broader risks to the block if fire had spread.
Governor John E. Les extended the 1939 automobile tag tax payment deadline to February 28 after earlier push to January 31. He said this would be the final extension in the regular schedule. Peter Bish acts as the licenses agent in Jal.
Mrs. Adah Miller, South Sea County health nurse, visited Jal schools Monday to investigate a reported chicken pox epidemic. Superintendent J. L. Burke Jr. said Jal has never had a serious epidemic and offered reasons tied to hill drainage and a limestone layer that purifies soil and water, limiting germ spread.
Qualified voters in School District No. 19 will vote Tuesday at the school building for a board director seat. M. M. Rogers, president chairman of the board, seeks re election and faces no opposition. A light vote is anticipated due to lack of challengers.
Jal Civic Club hosts a ladies night meeting at 7 p m next Tuesday at the Methodist Church with a dinner and talk session. President Randy Johnson urges attendance and notes plans for the city park and water system celebration. Mayor H H McAllister aims to set a tentative completion date for the water system and approves park work on the city purchased block for the new water well.
The House of David five, famed whiskered showmen led by Bill Steineke, visit the High School gym Saturday February 11 to face the El Paso Natural Gas Company five. The marching lineup aims for dominance with mid court shots by Hamilton and defense against the hidden ball tactic. Admission 50 cents adults, 25 cents students. tickets at Frank's Place.
R. G. Beckman and family moved from Jal to Nevada this week to seek gold. Mr. Heckman, long a Jal carpenter and Acme Lumber Company yard worker, sold his Jal home to pursue fortunes in the new Nevada gold fields. He helped build many local businesses and residences before departing.
Hobbs Eagles edge Jal Panthers 23 to 13 as illness sidelined two Panthers. Panthers vow to upset Monument Pirates Friday, with junior and senior squads scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. Coach J J Smith praises Panthers improvement despite loss.
A 1938 report shows the Welcome Port collected 45 987.05 in truck fees and licenses. Governor John E Miles proposed changes or abolition of the ports, but no action has been taken yet.
Two year old Evalyn Whitworth, daughter of Morris Whitworth, suffered a severe hand burn delaying a family move from Monahans where H R Boswell has been transferred to replace Mr Whitworth. J M Whitworth is her grandfather.
Jal boxer Ted Shaikewitz enters two tournaments this week Big Spring Thursday and Hobbs starting Monday He could reach the Fort Worth State finals Chicago nationals or Denver regional and San Francisco trip depending on wins He is the favorite to win at Big Spring.
Reverend C Y Butler announces a Cub troop with 15 members and invites other Cub aged boys to join. The group will meet at 10 a m Saturday at the Methodist Church before hiking into the country and bringing lunches.
The regular February city council session will be at City Hall Monday night. Council members say routine business will be discussed and citizens may submit items to City Secretary Woodrow Bailey before meeting time to be added to the agenda. Final water system operation details are expected to be discussed.
Kermit Man Blackie Lambley 50 a well known cement contractor in Jal burned to death in his Kermit home late Tuesday night. Fire started from a kerosene lamp exploded knocking it from a bedside table as he slept. Justice of the Peace J B Salmon ruled accidental death. Funeral services were held Thursday in Kermit. Survivors include his widow of Putnam Texas a 17 year old daughter and brother John Lambley of Eunice.
Mrs Peter Bish undertakes remodeling of the Woolworth hotel annex including rewiring weatherboarding and painting. She also plans interior decorations to enhance the space.
