Civic Club members crowd a Tuesday meeting for cleanup efforts and a city water system project. Engineer Brininstool says the water system will be finished within two to three weeks as donations aid the effort. a rifle club sponsorship is discussed and a celebration committee forms amid attendance of 24 members and a few out‑of‑town visitors.
C Lem Peters and J H Elder paid 80000 cash to Olean Petroleum Co for two producing wells Nos 1 and 2 Brunson and 200 acres in Penrose Lea County New Mexico. The tract sits in section 4 22s 87 and 3 22s 37e with combined daily allowable of 100 barrels. Peters already operates in Penrose sand belt alongside Mattix sand area. the Woolworth No 4 Well also reported 180 barrels in three hours in nearby area.
Jal city completes water tower bearing its name and pays 875 from water revenues. City Clerk Woodrow Bailey notes due occupation taxes. A 10 percent investment rate is effective and after five months a 5 fine can be applied. Council also pays routine bills.
Senator George T Harris told the Ja Civic Club in a letter he would support a fair regulatory bill for utility companies. New Mexico is the only state without such a law, one of forty eight states. The letter was read at the club on Tuesday night. Mr and Mrs Brock left Friday for Ranger and returned Sunday with Mrs Callie Marshall joining them to Clyde.
The El Paso Camp plant and transmission divisions held safety meetings with monthly sessions. Each division faces a perpetual contest with the other and the side with more accidents hosts a banquet. A yearly first aid course is provided by the Bureau of Mines. A Jal city ordinance limits bars to one per 400 feet.
Jal boxer Ted Shaikewitz suffered a surprising upset as Harold Stewart of Hobbs secured a technical knockout in the opening round of their bout at the Hobbs Golden Gloves tournament Monday night.
City Council orders construction of a new concrete jail on the old site. The jail will reuse bars from Lovington county jail with volunteer and convict labor. The facility will be safer and more sanitary and will house both city and county prisoners.
Band parents sponsor a game tournament on February 18 at the city hall to raise funds for band suits. They aim to raise about 200 dollars more, having 300 dollars in treasury, to order the suits in time for a barbecue in about three weeks.
John W. Wisner a registered pharmacist was added this week to the City Drug Store staff. Wisner holds certificates to practice in New Mexico and Nevada and came from Conchos Dam where the U S army is overseeing a construction project. He is married and Mrs Wisner moved with him to Jal.
George Baker was the first person to pay a city water bill this year. Brooks Brininstool, aiding the city’s water system improvement, says Baker’s prompt payoff serves as a shining example to the public.
Justice of the Peace Peter Bish was named city police judge by the City Council this week as part of a plan to curb reckless driving in Jal. The Council ordered a stop sign at East Second Street and Main Street intersection, with the State asked to supply the sign. Mayor H. H. McAllister said the aim is to make Jal streets safer for children and pedestrians.
A fast stepping Monument Pirates defeated Jal Panthers 36-24 on Jal's home court as Monument led 12-3 after the first quarter and 20-7 at halftime. Jal's Jeeter scored 12 points with four field goals and four free throws.
The Jal city council starts a drive to remove dangerous conditions and create a sanitary district. A citizen committee including Frank Butler and Peter Bish will organize cleanup, urge residents to clear premises, hire labor, and fund a garbage man. Clean-Up Week will be set for an intensive trash reduction.
On January 27 the area formerly called Camp Town adopted the new name Bennettville at the county courthouse in Lovington. The town, named after the landowner, now has deeds filed and utility services provided by the El Paso Company.
Jake Favelman takes over management of Bender System Grocery and Market and announces a new low-price policy on groceries and meats. C E Mathis remains in charge of the department. Road to El Paso Camp progressed with about half of the work finished and the rest graded, oil used but road still in poor condition awaiting about a month of further repairs. Mr and Mrs Frank Galle hosted visitors from Hobbs on Sunday.
