Johnson Named Civic Club Head Firemen to Sponsor Ball

Johnson leads civic club and Jal Fire Department to sponsor the President's Birthday Ball on Friday at the high school gym. Ray Hummell and his orchestra will provide music. Proceeds aid the infantile paralysis fund. Tickets are $1 per couple, on sale now.

Hobbs Chief Talks To Jal Fire Fighters

Hobbs Fire Department Chief Floyd Wynn spoke at Jal Fire Department on building a better fire service. He outlined organizing the group and planning an annual President's Ball in Jal, noting his appointment as Lea County committee chairman. New members Talmadge Norfleet Kenneth Bolding Smitty Sullins Milton Cook joined the meeting alongside attendees including Jimmie Morrison Tony Hurta Sam Carlini and others. The session ended after a half hour of drill.

Explosion Hits Jal Harming Pipeline, No Injuries

An explosion in Jal damaged an El Paso Natural Gas pipeline after midnight Tuesday. A heater on Jal Natural Gas No 1 Bates blew up, destroying the attached pipe. Gas was shut off in minutes and no one was hurt, though shock and debris disturbed the town.

Four More Students Enroll in Jal Schools

Four new students joined Jal Junior High and High School at the start of the second semester, bringing total enrollment to 180. Names include Rosemary Gentry from Hobbs, Betty Hoggatt a Seminole Oklahoma freshman, Billie Deves a Garden City Texas senior, and Andrew Moseley a Jal seventh grader.

Boy Scout Troop Holds Weiner Roast Near Jal

Boy Scout Troop 40 with troopmaster John Connell held a weiner roast Monday night at Boy Scout Ledge north of Jal. Afterward the Scouts played games. Eight boys attended the outing.

Jal City Water System Nearing 30 Day Finish

City Water Superintendent Brooks Brininstool reported steady progress on the Jal City water system. About half of the lead pipe has been laid and 145 meters have been ordered to arrive this week. Contractor Vedder said the entire project should be completed in thirty days.

Park Plan On Civic Club Docket In Jal City

Jal civic club set to discuss a city purchased site for a new park at the February 7 meeting as Ladies Night draws Jal women to weigh in on the project. Mayor H. H. McAllister says water well work will take at least a month and no park work will begin until water lines are laid.

House of David To Play Gas Team Feb 11

The House of David basketball team from Benton Harbor Michigan will play the El Paso Camp team here February 11 in the High School gym. Proceeds benefit school libraries. All seats are reserved at Frank's Place, admission 50 cents. The visitors are tall skilled players and the show blends basketball with comedy. Ticket sale date to be announced.

Bailey to Open Insurance Agency in Jal

City Secretary Woodrow Bailey announced plans to open the Jal Insurance agency soon while continuing duties as city secretary, bank branch manager, and volunteer fireman. Irving Faverman of Hobbs will take over management of Bender's Grocery here starting February 1, with Mr. Bender remaining in Hobbs and retaining an interest.

Floodlights Installed at Local School Grounds

Superintendent J. L. Burke Jr announced flood lights have been installed to illuminate the school grounds for evening programs. The west side is fully lit with plans for additional lights on the opposite side. Mr and Mrs A H Adams spent part of this week in Dallas.

Cub Scout Pack Organized with Twelve Members

A Cub Scout pack was organized Monday afternoon with twelve members. The Cubs will meet each Monday at 3 15 p m. A baseball team will be organized next Saturday and hikes are planned for next week. C Y Butler named Cub master inviting boys ages nine to twelve to join.

Sale of 54 Lots Reported in Jal Townsite

A land rush developed this week in Jal as Hubbs and Justis reported the sale of 54 lots in the townsite. Purchasers included local men and outsiders seeking building sites for homes.

Barbecue Sets Stage for Jal Civic Club Officers

Jal Civic Club met Tuesday night to elect Randy Johnson as president for six months and form a new slate of officers. H. H. McAllister was named vice president, Brooks Brinin secretary, and Dr W A Oakes treasurer. The gathering also planned a town water system celebration with a March date likely. Music master R L Myers began organizing a band contest with nearby towns invited to vie for two trophies funded by the club. Rev C Y Butler named Ralph Baird and Walter Pendleton to arrange Barbecue details for the event.

Monument And Hobbs Play Next Week

The Hobbs Eagles face Monument's Panthers in Jal next week with two big games. Juniors meet at 7 p.m. and seniors follow at 8 p.m.. Monument’s Pirate teams also play Friday February 3 at the same hour. Coach J. J. Smith predicts his squad will deliver the year’s best show.
