Year of sadness for Cupid noted in Chicago divorces
A Chicago chronicle laments 1906 as a dire year for married couples with a spike in divorces. It highlights high profile cases from Count Castellane to Senator Platt, Mrs. Yerkes and others, calling courts “divorce mills” and warning that prosperity did not ensure harmony as Cupid weeps at weddings undone and families broken across cities.

Adamless Eden hotel collapses after four years in New York
The Martha Washington hotel for women in New York, after four years of struggle and record occupancy, is to be turned over to a lessee. Despite its philanthropic aim to provide a modest home and social access for working women, the venture has produced no dividends, with stockholders losing money as costs and changing economics make operation impractical. The piece notes high property value and shifts in the hotel scene, including unusual public viewing of a Broadway engine room as a free attraction.

Hammerstein Missing From Manhattan Opera House Previews
Oscar Hammerstein has not yet attended the opening act of the Mos opera at the Manhattan Opera House. He was last found in a cellar passage near a stage door, seated in a fireproof private smoking room, lamenting the lack of access to his own stage and his after-dinner smoke. He complained of the foremen forbidding him on stage and hoped to hear one of his first acts despite the delay.
