Petition by No 23 saloon at the Cape was not filled and a large remonstrance was sent in. Report claims the dive has corrupted townsfolk and led many girls astray. if true, residents should pursue legal action, else the saloon should be cleared.
H W Lusk of Holcomb Missouri died at home last week from blood poisoning. Flooding covered Charleston Kenett and Caruthersville for over a week. C B Reed, on a third trial, was sentenced to two years in a penitentiary for shooting Judge J C Sheppard during last December's court session. Appeal to the Supreme Court set bond at $1000. Washington County courthouse burned January 16, with records saved. built in 1850, insurance $5000.
H H Anderson of Sparta Illinois has bought an interest in the C H Macke shop and will install new machinery and improvements to start an up to date machine shop. The venture will create employment for a few additional workers and encourage more small enterprises in Jackson.
The construction of the new court house is suspended until March first. Work will resume and proceed to completion. J H Himmelberger, who bought the Cape quarry from Rewenhardt, will retain Regenhardt to oversee the rock contract, with readiness hoped by January 1, 1908.
Mr. O R Penny long secretary of Jackson Methodist Quarterly Conference is now deceased and family deposited church records. A 1868 record lists a building committee including Wm Williams O R Penny Alex Moreland A D Leech and G C Henderson with Alex Moreland as chairman. Also elected stewards and trustees, noting L F Aspley then pastor and Andrew Peace presiding elder, dating back thirty eight years.
The legislature introduces bills on home rule for large cities by Sherman, capping tele frequencies by McDowell, licensing peddlers for mail order houses, and making insurance officers’ private gain investments a felony by Oliver. Tubbs anti tipping bill passes. county treasurer term extended to four years with no re election.
Charles Olderide a Sweed traveling from Cincinnati to New Orleans in wave shoes passed Cairo after six days. His wife and others trail in a small gasoline powered boat. If he reaches New Orleans in thirty days he wins 5000 dollars. if he fails he loses 5000. Supporters think he can endure.
Dyer Jr. former assistant teller in the U.S. Sub Treasury was tried for embezzling $61,000 but acquitted last week as no witness placed him at the scene. Jury reportedly stood 10 to 2 for acquittal.
Thomas Clagingsmith died recently and was buried at New Bethel church. Thomas Ackmann is ill with pneumonia and hoped to recover soon. Marice Abernathy near the neighborhood attends school Leemon. Peter Diamond may move to Cape, and the neighborhood will miss him. All respect Mr Diamond.
Health is reasonably good in the neighborhood with colds noted. Rain halted work for three weeks while Bruleigh buys and pays high prices for country produce. The new school boasts full rooms with scholars from nearby districts and two teachers. A Methodist revival in Fairview led by Revs. Roberts and Dixon has attracted good attendance and sermons. Several graduates secured teaching positions in Pemiscot and New Madrid counties. SOL. Cut sole leather of all kinds at JC. H. Wolter's.
Health is reasonably good with some colds. Rev D M Margrave preaches at Sheppard's school house while Rev Roberts and A M Dixon hold meetings at Fairview but interest is lacking. The writer supports Prohibition and laments liquor. Wm Brown died on the 18th and was buried at New Bethel. Charley Diemond moved his saw mill home after sawing 75000 feet of lumber. Community notes praise schools and churches and improving country.
The LaPierre-Sawyer Handle Factory, established in 1902, makes hickory handles and employs eight to ten men year round. Manager LaPierre reports strong demand, with weather hindering timber haulage. The article argues Jackson could support twelve to fifteen small enterprises and urges the Commercial Club to pursue such ventures despite current limits on large factories.

Bernhard Gockel Jr son of the sheriff passed the state board of pharmacy exam on January 15 at St Louis College of Pharmacy and will graduate in April. Eight of twenty three applicants passed and Bernhard was among them showing Jackson youth can achieve through study. At 18 his energy and scholastic habits began in Jackson public school and his parents celebrate his success.
Four Cape Girardeau sportsmen Dr J D Porter field L W Porterfield Dr Henry Snider and Robert Litterer hunted near Lilbourn in New Madrid county about two weeks ago. Porterfield and Litterer got separated during a rain and thunder storm, scrambling for wood to keep warm. They soon joined their companions again and planned a return trip last week to hunt ducks.
