Butts County Grand Jury Recommends Abolishment and Consolidation

Butts County Grand Jury for February term 1913 recommends abolishing certain offices and consolidating Tax Collector, Receiver, and Treasurer. They report county officers’ books follow the law, note jail and poor farm conditions, urge repairs, better sanitation, and building upkeep, and call for equipment and cleanliness improvements.

St. John's Lodge Plans Tuesday Degree Session

St. John's Lodge No. 45 F. and A. M. will hold a called meeting next Tuesday at 7 30 PM. Visiting brethren from sister lodges will attend and Worshipful Master H M Fletcher will confer the Master’s degree in his usual impressive manner. All qualified brethren are invited.

Georgia Weekly Press to Meet in La Grange This July

The Georgia Weekly Press Association Executive Committee met in Atlanta to finalize plans for the annual gathering in La Grange in July. LaGrange, lauded as the City of Elms and Roses, will host events including a city tour, visits to notable learning institutions, local industries, a Georgia Alabama League ball game featuring LaGrange, a visit to Ferrels Gardens, and a barbecue banquet.

Jackson City Court 10 Meet March 24 1913

Jurors witnesses and parties need not attend City Court of Jackson the second Monday in March but the March term will be held the week beginning March 24 1913 at which time they will attend Judge H. M. Fletcher C. C. of Jackson. J. L. Watson of Atlanta spent Sunday with his family. Hon. W. E. Watkins attended court in McDonough this week.

A group of Boy Scouts from Jackson under Scoutmaster Dr. Robert Van Deventer traveled by bicycle to Atlanta on Thursday and expect to return today. Lieutenant Ilomer Carmichael of the Jackson Rifles gave two or three squads a short military drill in the evenings, praising their aptitude and willingness to train as soldiers.

The Supreme Court reversed a lower court and held the Butts county ordinary lacked jurisdiction to declare the Ocmulgee river dam a nuisance. Citizens from Butts and Jasper counties must pursue abatement under a new law allowing suits where damage originates rather than where the power company offices are located.
