Too Many State Employees Hurt Taxpayers

An analysis notes a 55.7 percent rise in New York state employees from 1946 to 1955 while payroll and pension costs grew 164.5 percent, despite population rising only 12 percent. It questions whether all state workers are necessary and proposes a 20 percent across-the-board raise in 1956.

Derbyshire to Head Diamond Lodge at Irvington

John Derbyshire of 21 Main Street elected master of Diamond Lodge of Masons at annual meeting in Masonic Temple last Friday night to succeed Albert Howell. Derbyshire to be inducted January 6. Also elected were Matthew W. T runnor senior warden Edwin Ledeller Dobbs Perry junior warden William Z Lindsey treasurer I Stuart Kamke secretary and Herbert W Jewell trustee. Derbyshire born in Malden Mass educated at Yorkers High School and New York Institute of Photography. He joined Diamond Lodge in 1947 after Army duty overseas and is head of Philips Laboratories photography department. He is married to Eunice Brownell of Yonkers with two daughters Barbara and Carol May students in Irvington High School.

Half Mooners Hold Christmas Party and School Christmas Program

Half Moon residents sponsor a Christmas decorations contest judged by Miss Isabel K Benjamin with winners announced December 28. The Social Committee hosted a Chanukah Christmas party for cooperative children. Tevington High School held its annual Christmas assembly featuring the high and junior high choruses and the orchestra under Richard Folk, with solos and final hymn Joy to the World. Frances Valentine and others served as accompanists. A Northampton student from Mary A Burnham School arrived for the holidays at Ardsley Park.

Barry Soderlund Killed in Car Crash on South Broadway

Barry Soderlund of Osceola Avenue, a recent Irv ington High School graduate, died when the car he rode in crashed into a utility pole on the west side of Broadway near Station Road. The owner and driver, Joseph F. Boyle Jr of 198 Main Street, was arrested on criminal negligence resulting in death and driving while intoxicated charges, arraigned in Irvington Police Court, and held on $1,500 and $100 bail respectively.

East Sunnyside Lane residents push for drainage fix

Community along East Sunnyside Lane pressure Irvington and village leaders to address a persistent hole and drainage problems. Residents met with trustees, город officials, and developers, seeking a remedy from Greenburgh and nearby towns.

Town Hall Gleams and Sparkles in Yuletide Splendor

Irvington Town Hall glows with Christmas finery as Mayor Harriman lights dual trees. Girl Scouts lead singing from the lobby to Main Street, aided by the Irvington Garden Club. Windows display angel pictures by Mrs. Lewis Shrady, and all main-floor wreaths feature red bows. Inside, a multicolor lobby tree lights the village hall through the night. The Broadway Main Street tree also shines through New Year. Key Club members decorate Main Street poles with wreaths and place Santa and reindeer atop the high school wall.

Elementary School Reopens In New Building January 3

Irvington Public Schools will not reopen until Tuesday January 3 after Christmas recess. Students will meet in the new elementary school on Dow Lane for the first time. Removal of equipment from East Irvington and Pennybridge starts and continues until all furniture is moved. Construction of the new building progresses with heating tested and classrooms prepared.

Youth Center Events And Teen Dances Schedule

Youth Center hosts an informal dance for teenagers at Town Hall in the evening. A Cub Scout Pack meeting is planned at High School at 7 20 P M. A New Year party for ages 10 to 13 is listed for Town Hall at 8 00 P M. On Friday December 30 another youth New Year dance is set for Youth Center and Town Hall at 8 P M.

Riverside Road Renamed from Circle Drive in Irvington

The Irvington Board of Trustees renamed the southerly leg of Circle Drive from Broadway to Riverview Road to Riverside Road on Monday to resolve a long standing confusion. The six houses along the new Riverside Road can use Riverview Road as their address, though it was legally part of Circle Drive per the subdivision map of the former Charles Bigon estate dating to mid 1930s.
