Two Irvington families await the return of the bodies of soldiers killed in action during World War II. Private Joseph Gilchrist of Groton Place and Private Joseph A. Costello of East Chive served with American forces, Costello dying in France after earlier duty in England and North Africa. Costello, a Irvington High School graduate, was active in sports and later assigned to Syracuse University for military education. Both were among troops involved in the Normandy invasion and Allied campaigns in Europe.
