New York August 2. The stock market opened with feverish, unsettled action and irregular prices. Union Pacific drew the largest crowd, Southern Pacific saw wide opening moves with trades at 133 and 133.5. Reading rose to around 159 then jumped to 186.5 by 10:30 am, while declines of over three points hit many leaders, including Union Pacific, New York Central, Southern Pacific and Smelting. Early lack of support gave way to substantial buying orders as traders on the floor drove some gains.
