An automobile racing at high speed collided with a train near Long Jumau resulting in the instant deaths of the two occupants. The car attempted to cross the tracks as the train approached.
Barney Oldfield announced after the Indianapolis meeting a challenge to the world for a large purse. The race would be held on a prime course, likely at the Indiana Speedway, with top motor car names expected to compete and organizers aiming to bring the event to Indianapolis.
Thirty five thousand fans watched Kincaid win the 15 mile free-for-all handicap in 13 minutes 44.4 seconds amid record bids and an ovation for the Indianapolis entrant. Barney Oldfield set a ten mile world record in his Benz as the crowd cheered records tumbling and drivers vied for the Speedway Cup across 300 miles with Aiken and Lytle leading early stages.
The Dearborn County reunion returns for its eighteenth year this Sunday at Brookside park from 10 a m to 5 p m. Many county residents are expected to attend as the event has grown large. L E Francis serves as president and Mrs M A Nowlin as secretary.

In Rheims France on August 31 Curtiss the American aviator flew with M Sommer and M Bueneau Varilla. Experts judged his speed far ahead of rivals and predicted the American plane would win the speed contests. Odds favored Curtiss Blerict and Latham in a tight race.
D. F. Schaff division superintendent of the Big Four railroad company was arrested Saturday charged with violating the smoke ordinance at the Shelby street roundhouse. William Taylor chief clerk was initially arrested but found not responsible.
Corner Policeman Poole was struck by an automobile driven by Robert Schudder of South Bend Ind at the Dainois and Washington streets corner. Poole suffered a crushed foot as the car knocked him across its fenders. Schudder was arrested for driving to the left side of the street after coming to Indianapolis for the races and becoming confused by traffic.
Mary Copley Thaw, mother of Harry K Thaw, claims Dr Lamb at Matteawan asylum curtailed privileges and kept her son in a bare cell. She alleges revenge and new rules deny meals and piano time, noting long confinement and restricted visiting rights.
A pillar collapsed during a public inspection of a Budapest palace, killing one person and injuring twenty others as crowds filled the staircase area. Rescue crews worked to reach injured visitors amid the debris.
Chicago August report details Frank Owens of Hermitage Avenue requiring 30 days of daily kisses to prove his wife Catherine drank beer. He allegedly struck her after detecting beer odor and an open bottle. She appeared before Judge Watkins and was remanded to relatives, with Owens asked to post a week.
Eight year old showgirl Miss Ethel Weir ascended in the balloon University City at League Park with Capt. John Berry for a short trip. A tangled rip and valve cord caused a three hour runaway ascent to 15 000 feet before a safe landing in a Red Bud field. Boston August 21 Special master Everett W Burdett finds for the Western Union Telegraph Company in the accounting case against the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The ruling awards about 5 million dollars under a contract dated November 10 1679 after years of litigation and scrutiny.
Chicago auto driver Flynn awoke to a thief in his hotel room at the English hotel in Indianapolis early Saturday. A struggle ended when Flynn released the intruder who escaped with $8. Detectives Gerber Holtz and local bicycle officers Mullin Englebright investigated amid a spate of hotel thefts during the motoring races.
In Manor Pennsylvania a natural gas explosion at the home of William Cook at 7 am leaves one dying, three seriously injured and the house wrecked. Cook is severely burned and treated as dying at Greensburg hospital. Three other family members suffer burns and injuries but are expected to recover.
A special policeman J Dugan resigns after three days of service with the Board of Safety during the automobile races. He tired of long walks and turned in his badge to Lieut Belch after one night on the beat.
