In Seattle August 2 a car carrying Miss Agnes Cowen Miss Maggie Paul Mrs J I Cublin and Ira Perry a Seattle chauffeur plunged through the Tide Flats trestle railing. All but Perry were Vancouver residents.
The crowd at the 250 mile race witnessed Bourque and Holcomb killed as cars No 3 and No 37 battled for lead. Spectators remained riveted, commentating on speed and wrecks while ambulances ferried the injured. The press notes a culture where speed eclipses human loss and the race continues despite tragedy.
William Carl and Elizabeth Eisiele of Cleveland face a bleak future as police judge Wharton fines Carl ten dollars and costs and imprisons him ten days for beating a boarding house bill. A dismissed forgery charge against Carl follows a sympathetic plea from his sweetheart, and police doubt the marriage would endure, saying the devotion appears one sided.
Coroner Blackwell opened an inquiry into the automobile crash that killed William Bourque and Harry Holcomb. Witnesses offered conflicting views with claims of a rough track, an open tire ditch, and possible mechanical failure as Bourque tried to regain control.
In Youngstown Ohio a Park and Falls trolley car blew a controller blowing out, killing 23 year old Mrs Margaret Cutting who jumped with her seven month old baby. The infant was uninjured and was spared in the panic. Three other people were hurt in the incident.
Harry Mayo of 216 S Temple Avenue was badly hurt yet refused an ambulance to avoid frightening his wife. He crawled home, then with help rode a street car to a physician after a wagon crash at Massachusetts Avenue and Delaware Street. Frank Hall helped, but Hall was uninjured. A wagon from Home Furniture collided with a post as a frightened horse bolted through fire headquarters. Mayo suffered back injuries while Hall escaped harm.
The Stoddard-Dayton Automobile company hosted a banquet for its agents and drivers at the Denison hotel Thursday night. Speeches and toasts celebrated the racing team’s strong Speedway showing, with Jap Clemens of Indianapolis finishing second in the 2 1/2 mile race amid praise. A large flower car centerpiece lit by electric lights graced the banquet table.
Salvation Army holds Sunday services at Fresh Air Farm with crowds from New Augusta and Traders Point. Forty mothers and children are on an outing now and will return Tuesday. forty more will go for a week. Farmers donate provisions and money. contributions can be sent to Major Escott in the Baldwin Block.
Richard Ramsey knew George Hogarty and for knowing Ramsey was fined $10 and costs and given a ten day sentence in the workhouse Friday Hogarty was sent there on a charge of being a known thief Ramsey went to the Princeton hotel on S Illinois street where Hogarty had been stopping and asked for a grip Detectives Stewart and Smith arrested Ramsey Ramsey ran but the detectives succeeded in getting him Thursday Ramsey was charged with loitering
Otto Hofmann announces Friday his candidacy for the Republican nomination for sheriff in 1910. He is the first man in the race.
Admission costs one dollar at the west gate and fifty cents at the east gate. Big Four trains run to Speedway from Union station every ten minutes. Round trip tickets are twenty cents from the Meridian and Washington streets office, or on trains. Ben Hur Interurban cars depart every twenty minutes with a four cent round trip. Box seats cost a dollar fifty. Tickets available at Fisher’s Capitol Avenue and Vermont street and Huder’s drug store at Pennsylvania and Washington streets.
Jacob Miller says a conductor on an English avenue street car ejected him from the E Tenth street line on June 5, 1909. He claimed he sought an F Tenth transfer and was forced off with great force and violence, walked two miles home in the rain, fell ill for weeks, and has sued the Indianapolis Traction and Terminal Company for $1,000.

At Speedway on August 20 Edward Tutt reports twenty two thousand fans amid sunshine and parasols as the day centers on the 50 mile stripped chassis event. Oldfield, Chevrolet, Burman, Strang and Bourque figure among notable drivers with seven cars finishing the 50 mile race. Earlier races see Strang, Chevrolet, Thompson and Merz winning five and ten mile heats as crowd energy turns a grim tragedy into a riotous motorsport spectacle.
Society leaders and motorists packed the grandstand for opening day at the speedway. Indiana city figures and politicians attended as 1,000 autos ferried spectators, with band music and a 250-mile race for the Presto Lite trophy. The crowd savored speed, novelty, and sunshine amid the motor car spectacle.
Margaret M. Brooks, administratrix of James Wm Brooks estate, sues Indianapolis Rubber Co for $10,000 damages claiming he was killed when an elevator struck him at the rubber plant after he was measuring for a heating installation. An operator is alleged to be careless.
