Winter freezing frost girdling damages plum trees in Pennsylvania

A Clearfield county banker asked State Zoologist H A Surface for advice on three year old plum trees that suddenly wilted and died this summer. Surface identified winter freezing as the cause, likening it to peach injury, and advised pruning, cultivation and fertilization to stimulate regrowth. He advised against boiled oil on trees and suggested severe pruning toward spring and continued care to outgrow damage. He noted similar injury to a pear tree and recommended fall banking as good practice.

Language learning by ear wins over grammar rules

C P Hrakine argues that languages can be learned by listening and speaking from infancy, claiming native teachers and oral methods would allow American students to acquire German and French fluency. He denounces grammar-heavy teaching as wasteful and urges early, practical pronunciation training. A separate note mocks mustache culture in clerical circles with a humorous anecdote.
