The White and Black Pebbles at West Point Cadet Romance
A fragment from a wartime tale recounts cadets Robert Marker and Warfield, rivals in love with Clara Denne, who later serve in the Mexican campaign. Captains Warfield and a fellow prisoner face execution by garrote, then firing squad, after a Mexican captain misdraws a white pebble. Only Warfield survives, saved by a white pebble hidden by a dying comrade, and Mrs. Harker recalls the sacrifice.
