The Los Angeles Air Pollution District reports peak readings of 40 parts per million sulfur dioxide and 10-? parts per million nitrogen oxides. California standards set at 2 ppm nitrogen oxides and 40 ppm sulfur dioxide daily average. The chemical pollutants worsened visibility. oxides of nitrogen largely come from cars, while industry adds sulfur dioxide from power plants and refineries.

Smog alerts issued under new county warning system
The Los Angeles County Air Pollution Control District adds warnings for dangerous carbon monoxide levels. A new health alert system, approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, will issue notices when CO may reach 35 parts per million in any area. Oxidant warnings already existed.

Public lands gain access under new California law
Sacramento Acting Gov Ed Reinecke signed legislation to let the public more easily use forests streams and beaches. The bill, authored by Sen Robert Lagomarsino, allows private landowners to open land to public recreation without losing title. The State Supreme Court has ruled private lands could become public with five years of public use if pilots permit. In Omaha Nebraska, John Oviatt, 27, jailed inmate, reported paralysis in both legs and was transported to Douglas County Hospital where he regained use before escaping in a wheelchair later missing.

Assembly OKs reward for killing of cop
In Montebello a 440 reward for the capture of four robbers who killed a local policeman at a liquor store holdup was approved 62 to 6 by the Assembly and sent to the Senate. Assemblyman Jack Newton secured special permission to introduce the bill after the April deadline for unrestricted introductions. The measure was needed because the city learned it could not offer a reward without legislative approval.

Federal Court Ordered Cincinnati Civil Service to Explain Refusal
A federal appeals court ruled the Cincinnati Civil Service Commission must appear in court to answer why it refused to hire Ruth Johnson, 43, as a building inspector.
