County gag on public health sparks diphtheria alarm
Long Beach attorney and Health Commission vice chair Marvin Tincher charges a county gag order since two months ago endangers residents by blocking health officials from publicizing emergencies. He cites a diphtheria outbreak in South Central Los Angeles as proof the policy delays vital immunization alerts and press contact. The rule, pushed by CAO Arthur Wills, requires material to pass through the CAO before release, reducing rapid public warnings and forcing health staff to canvass communities without mass media.
