Senate vote cuts arms aid and more military downsizing
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a 7 to 6 vote to cut the foreign aid bill by 20 percent, reducing military assistance from 703 million to 565 million while preserving aid to Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The measure would affect Korea, Cambodia, Turkey, Greece, Jordan, and Taiwan if enacted. The Army announced a plan to release 65,000 personnel to reach 892,000, trimming overstrength ranks. Also noted were plans to turn Ft. Detrick into a cancer research center and a surge of arrests in Wilmington amid earlier racial disturbances. A separate wage hike and school integration funding debates are described.
