Funeral honors for Ernent Illamy Williams with widow Evelyn present. A longtime engineer and navy veteran from Airlie and Independence, he died after years in BC before returning to Oregon. Masonic and American Legion rites noted along with floral tributes.
The elity council audited and ordered payment of a batch of claims at Wednesday night’s meeting. No major actions were taken beyond routine items and adjournment was set for next Wednesday.
Homer Hill completes purchase of the H. R. Underhill ranch located about a mile south of Inde Pendener on the main road. The 145 acre property features good sidings and strong cultivation. Mr Underhill will operate the ranch for the foreseeable future.
Funeral services for Joseph Bezan WA who died October 2 were held at the Presbyterian church yesterday afternoon with Rev. George Van hon of Salem officiating. Interment was made in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
The Polk county division of the State Teachers Association organized at the county institute in Dallas. L. L. Gooding of Monmouth elected president C. D. Byers of Independence vice president Josiah Wille of Dallas treasurer. The group reviewed 150 Polk teachers showing many educated at Oregon Normal. Dr. Dubach of Oregon Agricultural College spoke on Political Parties.
Oliver Smith has closed his cigar store and pool room in the Whiteaker building. He has stored fixtures and moved household goods to Portland where he expects to reside permanently. Mrs. Smith moved to Portland. Mr. Smith remains until after the election.
Repairing of the revetment just north of town has started under the direction of the War Department. Operations will continue for about three weeks then pause until spring.
A Sunday night ceremony at the Christian church united Mrs. Sadie Singleton and Otto D. Stevens with Rev. L. Farris Powell officiating. The bride wore cream lace and carried yellow chrysanthemums, and the couple will reside in Portland. Local notices recount social events and travels around Monmouth, including HalloweEn gatherings and a water outage affecting chores.
The Iris theatre will receive a large radio installation shipped from Portland and set up immediately. Manager Ross Nelson plans to feature election returns Tuesday night using the new equipment unless an unforeseen contingency arises.
William Sloper, 69, a former Independence resident, died after an extended illness at Willamette Hospital in Salem. He was born near Davenport Iowa and moved to Oregon in 1877, later settling in Independence then Salem. Survived by widow Melvina, two sons Leon of Waterloo Ore and Ross of Fresno, and daughter Lillie Loftin of Waterloo. brother of T. W. Hart. Funeral held in Salem with burial at Jason Lee cemetery. attendees included George Sloper, T. W. Hart, Ezra Hart, and James A. Roberts family.
Monmouth residents experienced several days of water service interruption after the city’s supply from Falls City was shut to clear debris. The 10 mile pipeline drained and filled slowly, forcing closures at Nomal and the training school and highlighting dependence on the municipal system.
James Hilliard Henry Hirk holy George Conkey and A W Closter returned from a two week deer hunting trip near Myrtle Creek. They endured mountain trekking and praised the Grounds family for excellent hospitality and venison meals. A large buck was later wounded near the Hilliard ranch.
The public sale of Will Bloch at the Nelson ranch northwest of town drew heavy attendance on Wednesday. A large group of brood sows and pigs sold well with other items mostly disposed of at good prices. A. L. Stevenson was auctioneer and Ira Mix the clerk. Lunch featured real chicken sandwiches with 42 chickens used. Bloch plans retirement from farming to enter retail meat business, location to be decided.
A. L. Allen and Merle Nye earned honors for quick hunting after a trip to Tillamook. They returned with a large deer killed by Allen, while other locals enjoyed varied activities including visits, travel, and a salmon fishing misadventure on the Nehalem River.
At Harry D Iliff’s Sunny Lea Jersey Farm two cows and a bull sire gain state and national medal honors. St Mawes Lad’s Ruby and St Mawes Lad’s Princess qualify for gold and silver medals. butterfat yields set records. St Mawes Lad, sire to the medalists, becomes the first Jersey bull with three daughters earning gold and silver medals from their first calves.

Mr and Mrs George Kutch returned last Thursday from Tillamook where they stayed a week at the home of their niece Mrs S T Daniels Mr Kutch fished part of the time and was quite successful They left Wednesday for California to spend a month driving with G E Thomason and wife of Turner Mr Thomason is Mrs Kutchs brother
