Government Takes Inventory of Timber in Cascade Forest

Fifteen or more expert timber cruisers in the government employ are in Eugene ready to survey the Cascade forest reserve. They will classify land and segregate timber into logging units along the Willamette watershed, aiming to complete the work this summer and into next year. This marks the first government effort to inventory timber resources for fair disposal.

Not Enough Votes In District For Direct Primary

The secretary of state ruled there were insufficient Democrat votes in the Second Congressional District two years ago to nominate a candidate under the direct primary law. Nominations must be made under the old system as the party failed to reach the 25 percent threshold required to be recognized in the district.

Death of James Wallace in Nassau County

James Wallace died at his mother Mrs. Edwin Wallace’s Maple Avenue home in Lynbrook after a short illness of erysipelas and heart trouble. He was 49 or 50, son of the late Captain Edwin Wallace, a major Rockville Centre realty owner. Born in the village, he graduated from Columbia Law School and moved to Independence Oregon, returning east after his father’s death to care for his mother. His widow and son are expected to arrive soon for funeral arrangements, and the mother remains gravely ill.

Annual Races Great Success Parade Opens Independence Meet

The fifth annual Independence Driving Club meet in Folk County opened with a parade down Main Street amid sunny weather and holiday spirit. Winners in draft, roadster, and standard bred categories were announced, with Albion and Golden Robin among top prizewinners. The afternoon program featured two- and three-year-old races, trotting and pacing events, and times listed for multiple heats. Thursday saw stronger attendance, a horse show, and driving contests won by Hembree and McTimmonds, with awards for single and double drivers and lady riders.
