Republicans Gather for Polk County Assembly in Dallas

A Polk county Republican assembly convened at the Dallas courthouse last Saturday at 10:30 with Dr. B. H. McCallen presiding and Walter Toore Jr elected secretary. Delegates from multiple locales were named to seats, with Walter L Toone and H. G. Campbell elected officers and a slate of county, state, and district nominees endorsed for the July Portland assembly.

Adjourning Congress Sets Record Amid Mixed Credit Claims

After a final day of pressure Congress adjourned with a record workload and pledges by factions to credit the president’s message. Sixteen measures were adopted from about eighteen urged, including railroad reforms and a commerce court, while the cost totals reach over a billion dollars in appropriations. A. W. Lafferty announces bid for Congress in Oregon opposing Rep. Ellis in the Republican primary.

Last Day of Races at Meet Sees Strong Attendance

The final race day drew record attendance as Sunny Jim won the 2:15 pace with Lou Miller second and Lord Sidney Dillon third. Best time across the four heats was 1.063 in the last heat of the event.

Mrs Kurre Recalls Death of W J Crabtree in Oregon Pioneer Tale

Mrs Wm Kurre of Albany forwards an alternative account of W J Crabtree s death after a dispute with Hirons on the Crabtree property. The fight led Crabtree to rebuke Hirons, a neighbor intervened, and Hirons allegedly forced entry despite orders to leave. Crabtree collapsed, heart weakness cited, aged sixty one, an Oregon pioneer who crossed the plains in 1858.

Calvary Presbyterian Church Announces Fourth of July Services

Regular services continue at the new church with a patriotic Fourth of July evening program. Pastor W J Weber presides in his absence Rev J A MacVeigh will preach both morning and evening. A quarterly meeting for covenant and business is set for Saturday at 2 30 p m with important questions to discuss. Communion follows the Sunday morning sermon.
