Tod Denied Metallic Currency Charges in Ohio Debates
The Trumbull Democrat reiterates Col. Tod never uttered support for a metallic currency, challenging the New ark Gazette Western Reserve Chronicle to prove the claim. Benedict of Braceville certifies Tod favored such currency in 1840 at Leffingwell’s tavern but Benedict’s sworn statement disputes the charge and defends Tod’s integrity. The piece also notes German support for Clay and tariff protections, plus shifts in Maine and Pittsburgh papers.
