Delivered before the Athenian Literary Society of Norwalk Seminary on July 10 1844 by Doctor F Williams. The speaker argues for moral and intellectual duty, tracing Puritan origins, Providence guiding history, and the need to educate and sustain liberty through virtue, knowledge, and Christian faith for a growing nation. The oration honors ancestors, laments internal discord, and urges citizens to strengthen democracy and national character for future generations.
The speech cites evidence from opponents to claim the Native American party was founded in New York and Philadelphia by Locofocos. It notes a Cumberland Ga Pa meeting with Locofoco leaders as president and secretary, and Lancaster reports naming Locofocos including Forney Naumen Hambright Dr. Freeman and Jacob Myers among German speakers in 1835 to 1841. It warns Ohio citizens against blaming Whigs and asserts the movement would weaken Whig dominance.
A fragment notes a Native American part or nearly all Hoes and twenty four persons competing identified as members of a vice‑president committee and others of the place on the fifth.

He criticizes party leaders who seek power for rewards, questions the character of presidential contenders, and urges voters to judge by virtue and proven public service, citing Washington as a standard and contrasting Polk with that ideal.
